A First: Ohio Will Show Voters How Many Absentee Ballots Remain Uncounted in Election Results
Editor's Note: This article originally appeared on The Fulcrum, and has been republished on IVN with permission from the publisher.
Ohio will provide updates starting election night on the number of absentee ballots that haven't arrived to be counted. It's an apparent first, especially in a battleground state, that good-government experts are hailing as a smart way to help the public through the unique rhythm of this election.
The obvious benefit is to underscore that races too close to ca

Postmaster General Says Postal Service Changes Will Be Suspended until After Election
Editor's Note: This article originally appeared on The Fulcrum and has been republished on IVN with permission from the publisher.
Postmaster General Louis DeJoy said Tuesday he would "suspend" all recent operational changes and cost-cutting moves until after the election in order to "avoid even the appearance of any impact on election mail."
The announcement was an emphatic and sudden abandonment of one of the most controversial governmental actions during a presidential campaign transfor

Kanye West is the Poster Child for Our Need to Fix an Easily Manipulated Voting System
The election shenanigans surrounding Kanye West should be the poster-child for our need to fix an easily-manipulated and broken voting system.
Soon after the revelation that the GOP had its operatives collecting signatures for the famous rap star, Kanye himself admitted that his “candidacy” for president was all about siphoning votes from Joe Biden. Experts opined that this GOP strategy was to offer up Kanye as an alternative to black voters and others who would otherwise vote Biden in high pe

Justice Requires Us to Act!
This is a horrific time for our country and a time of deep reflection for me.
As a child of the 60’s, it is almost incomprehensible to fathom that we are experiencing a moment that is eerily similar to what I lived through fifty year ago on May 4, 1970.
In recent weeks, the brutal murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, Ahmaud Arbery, in addition to so many others, have shaken our nation to the core.
These tragic circumstances make it clear, yet again, that systemic discriminati

Giant Funding Gaps Threaten Elections in GOP States, Study Finds
This article was first published on The Fulcrum
While $400 million in federal funds has been allocated to make voting safer during the coronavirus pandemic, local election officials and good-government groups say that's not nearly sufficient. In fact, spending all the money in just five bigger states would not even cover their necessary expenses.
That was a central conclusion of a report, co-authored by liberal and conservative think tanks and released Thursday, designed to buttress the case

Opinion: Ranked Choice Voting Must Be A Part of the Coronavirus Elections Fix
Richie is president and Daley a senior fellow at FairVote, a nonpartisan electoral reform group that promotes ranked-choice voting. This month Daley published "Unrigged: How Americans Are Battling Back to Save Democracy" (Liveright).
So much has changed in American life, and so quickly, that it's hard to believe it's been just four weeks since former Vice President Joe Biden shocked Sen. Bernie Sanders with a rout on Super Tuesday.
A race that had been unsettled for months, seemingly bound for

10 States Where Party Planners Can Host (and Avoid) Representative Primaries
Illinois should host the first presidential primaries if the goal is to pick a state that most closely matches the demographics of the country.
And Vermont, the home state of Democratic front-runner Bernie Sanders, should have minimal influence over the process because its makeup is least similar to the entire United States — meaning the results from that state would be hardly at all predictive of the nation's views.
Those are among the conclusions out Thursday from the personal financial ser

Activote: A New App for Voters Who Care About the Future of our Republic
We live in an information age. Social media keeps people connected no matter where they are, with most people having access to news at their fingertips. Yet, ironically for many, it feels like it has never been harder to be an informed voter.
Many people never know when a local election is coming up, or the importance of a primary. Voters want to know more about what candidates really stand for in an election, but it is difficult to sift through the noise to find substantive information.

Supreme Court: Federal Court Will NOT Stop Partisan Gerrymandering
The Supreme Court on Monday once again reaffirmed its stance on partisan gerrymandering: federal courts will not stop it.
This time the case is out of Michigan, where a lower court ordered 34 legislative and congressional districts to be redrawn because the court found that the districts were drawn explicitly for the purpose of giving Republicans an advantage. The Supreme Court voided this order and tossed the case entirely.
The high court's decision comes not long after a similar ruling in an
