Assemblymembers Josh Hoover and Natasha Johnson just introduced a constitutional amendment to make California’s Secretary of State nonpartisan — taking the office that administers elections out of party hands entirely. The referee shouldn’t wear a jersey?
The bill really isn't about what's going on in California, frankly. Just look at Missouri, where a partisan secretary of state just told voters they aren’t allowed to say no to partisan gerrymandering. Or New York City, where the new City administration says 1.2 million voters don't have a right to vote in their taxpayer funded primaries.
When the officials who control elections answer to a party first, the voters are the ones who get overruled ... Every Time. Everywhere.
