"I am sickened by this despicable act. And let me be perfectly as clear as I can be; violence of any kind is unacceptable, and I condemn this action in the strongest possible terms." - U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.)

Those are the remarks Sen. Sanders made after the Virginia shooter who opened fire on Republican members of Congress Wednesday morning was publicly identified as James T. Hodgkinson.

Hodgkinson, 66, opened fire on a group of Republican lawmakers practicing baseball in a park in Alexandria, Virginia. He wounded House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and a few others, including a Capitol Police officer. Security and Capitol Police present returned fire. Hodgkinson reportedly died of his injuries.

Information on Hodgkinson is still emerging, but Sanders said he was told the shooter volunteered for his 2016 presidential campaign.
