Opioids at CPAC - The Ultimate Nonpartisan Issue
Eric Bolling climbed onto the main stage at CPAC and delivered what no one ever wants to have to say.
"I am an accidental opioid expert."
What followed was part eulogy and part straight-up retelling of a massive loss.
Keep in mind that the rest of the speeches I heard at CPAC were mainly partisan jabs at the left, or even the center. But clearly Bolling’s was going to be different.
Bolling detailed how he and his wife got a phone call shortly after his contract was severed with Fox News last

From Old Glory to Old Gory: Massacres Need Independent Engagement
Is there any more grotesque example of American “exceptionalism” than our longstanding failure to respond to recurring, murderous violence in our schools?
Is the nation that led mankind to the moon and back unable to halt the tragic transformation of children and teachers into the neatly gathered, heedlessly compliant soft targets for cowards wielding weapons of war?
THE CURTAIN RISES ON OUR KABUKI THEATER
As the smoke and chaos cleared from the Marjorie Stoneman Douglas School, our politici

Turning Tides at the New Orleans Summit
Sitting in the audience at the Unrig the System Summit in New Orleans two weeks ago, I couldn’t help but feel that a tide was turning. Speaker after speaker at this high energy and well-attended event made one central point: America cannot engage its massive social and economic problems under the present system. It is too corrupt.
Until we change it, reform it, re-engineer it, we will be powerless.
The conference’s main organizer, Josh Silver of Represent.Us, echoed this point throughout the w

Beyond The Memo: Can We Trust The FISA Court?
Friday, the White House released a controversial memo meant to provide some context to the whole Trump/Russia investigation.
The Nunes memo is four pages long, and it explains many of what seem to be very questionable actions by the Department of Justice and the FBI in how they got their hands on FISA warrants on Trump campaign officials.
But more than just this case, this memo backs up what civil libertarians have been screaming about for years. And begs the question—can the FISA court system

George Washington: THE Independent OG (Original Gangsta) of US History
In this new series, Independent OGs, writers at IVN News will chronicle the lives and exploits of independents throughout history – or as we are calling them: Independent O.G.s (short for Original Gangstas).
Of course George Washington was THE Independent OG of all American history, and it would seem that every president since has departed further and further from the example and precedent that Mr. Washington set.
To begin with, George Washington was in fact the only president in United States

The Debt Crisis: The ONLY Issue That Matters in 2018
Note: the author is an independent candidate for Ohio’s 12th Congressional District.
Whatever my stance is on any other issue won't matter if we don't take care of this one: the national debt. I have a plan to avoid the coming crisis; however, we need to act now to implement it, as our window of opportunity is rapidly closing.
This chart, from the Congressional Budget Office, illustrates exactly where we are at this point in our nation's history (I added the "we are here" with an arrow):

Newspaper Editorial: "New York Is A Model for Voter Suppression"
The news website, The Island Now, published an editorial recently that is worth reading. It challenges the way many people view voter suppression in the US.
The focus in most media outlets are perceived efforts in Republican state legislatures to suppress the votes of Democrats, as if the problem is just one-sided. But it isn't. Voter suppression, and the attempt to silence people who refuse to have a (D) or (R) next to their name is something both parties do.
It is no different in New York, w

Reality Check: Veterans Have Lost Faith in A Failing VA System
The newspaper headline caught my eye. For 15 years, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (the VA) illegally hired physicians and surgeons with revoked licenses and malpractice convictions.
As an organizational psychologist and former political candidate, I often described the need to transform the VA and how veteran suicide reflects national questions about war and peace-building. With Steve Sanson, president of Veterans in Politics, International, I co-wrote an article about vets in prison

US Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) discussed a number of issues when he appeared on Laura Ingraham's radio show Friday, including DACA, immigration, infrastructure and more. However, one of the longer discussions was on Jeff Session's actions on marijuana enforcement and the growing trend of legalization among individual states.
Rand Paul said that now that individual states are taking it upon themselves to end p
