San Diego County Supervisor Nora Vargas is running for a second term to represent the residents of District 1. She is running against Alejandro Galicia, but he has not raised any money, giving Vargas an extremely easy path to re-election.
Galicia ran unsuccessfully for state senate two years ago. He does not have a campaign website and he has not raised any money for this race, according to campaign finance reports. Vargas has raised $182,000 for her re-election campaign.
Vargas was sworn in January 4, 2021, as the first Latina, first immigrant, and first woman of color in the over 200-year history of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. Last year, she was unanimously elected chairwoman of the Board of Supervisors.
“As Co-Chair of the County's COVID-19 subcommittee, Chairwoman Vargas has led efforts to mitigate the impacts of the global pandemic, with a strong focus on economic recovery from an equity lens,” her bio says.
“She serves as Chairwoman for SANDAG, member of the Air Pollution Control District, and County representative to the California State Association of Counties (CSAC), and National Association of Counties (NACo). In February 2022, Chairwoman Vargas was appointed by Governor Gavin Newsom to serve on the California Air Resources Board.”
A progressive Democrat, Vargas is not always aligned with labor or her Democratic colleagues on the Board of Supervisors, an independent streak that could appeal to NPP voters.
