SCOTUS Hints Partisan Open Primaries May Be Unconstitutional
The U.S. Supreme Court might be headed toward a major decision regarding partisan open primary elections. In two court cases, the Republican and Democratic parties, respectively, have challenged the constitutionality of partisan open primaries.
The Republican case was brought in Montana, where the GOP controls the legislature. The Democratic case is in Hawaii, where the Democratic Party controls the legislature. In both cases, the parties argue that allowing nonpartisan voters to participate in

Libertarian Party Fights Back Against Duopoly Nationwide
The Libertarian Party continues to bask in a historic election year, gaining party status and ballot access in more states in 2016. The general platform of fiscal conservatism and social liberalism/tolerance/openness is striking a cord with many voters looking for alternatives outside the two-party political structure.
In some states, like Iowa, the local Libertarian Party is celebrating major party status. However, other Libertarian Parties must fight Republican and Democratic forces to gain t

U.S. Representative Darrell Issa, a Republican representing the 49th district in California, said he was not going to let the Trump-Russia accusations slide and U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions should recuse himself for an independent, special prosector should Trump be charged or suspected of wrongdoing.

Meet the Press: Energy in Both Parties Not with Washington Elite
During Sunday morning's episode of Meet the Press, host Chuck Todd and his panel of political commentators discussed the current state of the Republican and Democratic Parties. The conclusion? Grassroots movements are dominating the discussion and the two most energizing forces on both sides of the aisle, Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders, are not actually members of their respective parties.
Gerald Seib, Washington bureau chief for The Wall Street Journal, explained:

First Amendment Under Fire: The Real Threat to the Republic
"No government ought to be without censors; and where the press is free no one ever will." -- Thomas Jefferson
The White House Friday excluded reporters from The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Politico, BuzzFeed News, and CNN, from attending a briefing by press secretary Sean Spicer.
Those admitted to Spicer’s briefing -- Breitbart, Fox News, Washington Times, American News Network, and The Wall Street Journal -- are mostly in lock-step with the new administration; more inclined to parrot

History Indicates a Rocky Road Ahead for Term Limits
True to their promise to impose term limits, Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) and U.S. Representative Ron DeSantis (R-FL) kicked-off 2017 by introducing a constitutional amendment which proposes limiting service to three terms in the House (6 years) and two terms in the Senate (12 years). However, imposing term limits is no menial task, due to the 1995 Supreme Court rule (
U.S. Term Limits v. Thornton, No. 93-1456) which limits the ability for state’s legislatures or Congress to impose term limits. Limi

My Encounter with Ayn Rand at Fourteen
I was 14 when I saw "The Fountainhead" with Gary Cooper and Patricia Neal. I saw the film on a Saturday afternoon at the North Park Theater in the San Diego community by that name (a 10 cents trolley ride from our home on Redwood Street).
I did not go because "The Fountainhead" was playing, but rather because that’s what kids did on Saturday afternoons when the Pacific Coast League Padres were not playing at Lane field, we took in a flick.
Looking back 67 years later, I’m certain "The Fountain

Media, White House Fight over Control of "Exactly What People Think"
On Wednesday's episode of MSNBC's Morning Joe, Mika Brzezinski made a comment that is currently making its rounds on conservative-leaning news outlets and news aggregation sites like Drudge Report:
Brzezinski
The way Brzezinski phrased the end of her remarks makes it sound like she is saying the media's job is to control the way people think. This is not dissimilar from a member of the press saying it is the media's job to decide for the people which presidential candidates are viable and whic
