The Paul Ryan Bump in Four Swing States
The Paul Ryan Bump in Four Swing States
Credit: purplestrategies.com Not another Paul Ryan story! Those in-tune with the political debate might be thinking that, but the selection does pose an interesting dynamic. Since he was selected as the Republican Vice Presidential candidate, his work and record have been under scrutiny. Some experts say the selection has helped solidify what the Republican ticket will stand for. Some experts say the selection still confuses the partisan debate. Whether or not either is true, substantive polic

Las Vegas Makes an End Run to Get More Colorado River Water
Las Vegas Makes an End Run to Get More Colorado River Water
Hoover Dam near Las Vegas. Credit: commons.wikimedia.org The politics of Colorado River water rival those of Northern Ireland and Lebanon for complexity, opaqueness to outsiders, and rivalries going back decades. Even those familiar with the territory aren’t always sure what’s going on. Las Vegas and the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) headed by Pat Mulroy give surrounding states twitches as they try to figure out what SNWA will do next. And SNWA is making moves again. Southern Nevada h

Mass Shootings in 2012
Mass Shootings in 2012: A Google Map Perspective Following the shooting attack in Wisconsin and last month's massacre in Colorado, I felt it would be interesting to show how many shootings have been deemed significant by the press or by other gun safety advocates using a Google Map. United Under Rings
United Under Rings
They came.  They saw.  They conquered.  The world met in London.  Athletes competed while under a flag of five rings... one for each continent (Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia/Oceania, and the Americas).  In these days of competition, there has been a bigger understanding of our cultural differences and a bigger exchange of human understanding.  For these past couple of weeks, the nations of the world have been united in friendship, harmony, and peace. Watching these games, I have seen the athl

Credit: TED KIRK/Lincoln Journal Star In America today, we often consider ourselves to be politically divided and diametrically opposed. However, we are not all that different. The two political parties maintain their ranks by sharpening our contrasts and blurring our commonalities. Therefore, we cannot reasonably expect the parties to resolve the conflicts they manufacture. The recent tragic shooting in

Sikh Temple Shooting: Why So Many Lone Gunmen?
Sikh Temple Shooting: Why So Many Lone Gunmen?
Wade Michael Page has been identified as the suspected Sikh Temple shooter who killed six worshipers on Sunday before a police officer fatally shot him. Authorities say he had 9/11 tattoo on one of his arms and was a member of white supremacist groups. He was also reportedly a member of several extreme right-wing racist bands, including a band called Blue Eyed Devils. As new insight rolls in, it seems it would be quite fair to describe him as a Neo-Nazi. Perhaps he blamed Sikhs for September 11
