Supreme Court Hearings on Health Care Reform Kick Off
Supreme Court Hearings on Health Care Reform Kick Off
The US Supreme Court will hold hearings this week on a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of Obama’s health care plan. The lawsuit was filed by twenty six states, four small business owners, and the proudly ferocious National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB.)  The lawsuit contends the federal government does not have the authority to order people and businesses to buy health insurance (and face fines if they don’t.)  The hearings will surely be closely watched. Indeed, the future

Meet Justin Amash: The Coolest Member of Congress
Meet Justin Amash: The Coolest Member of Congress
Meet Justin Amash (R-MI), the coolest congressman that you've never heard of. He doesn't grab headlines the way Michele Bachmann, Nancy Pelosi, Ron Paul or some of the other more notorious members of Congress do, but in his short time as a U.S. congressman, Amash has done a lot of things that-- agree with his positions or not-- most Americans would probably agree are just plain cool. Swept to victory for his first term in the U.S. House back in 2010 with the support of the Tea Party movement, J

Do GOP Candidates Control Their Delegates?
Do GOP Candidates Control Their Delegates?
On Lawrence O’Donnell's MSNBC show last week, spokespersons for Gingrich's Super PAC, the Santorum Campaign, and MSNBC Analyst Steve Schmidt, most recently portrayed by Woody Harrelson in HBO's movie Game Change, all stated that other than possibly Dr. Ron Paul no campaign is in complete command of “its” delegates. One of the basic tenets of being a viable candidate for President is to have a competent delegate whip structure, which in turn leads to delegate vetting. In the Democratic Party, the

Senate Panel Talks Local Food for Upcoming Farm Bill
Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack says that local food is one of the fastest growing segments of agriculture, with direct consumer sales doubling in the past decade to reach close to $5 billion in 2008. Vilsack, and a panel of agriculturalists from across the U.S. provided testimony before the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry. The March 7 Healthy Food Initiatives, Local Production, and Nutrition hearing provided something of a status report, as well as a refined set of

Aftermath of Super Tuesday Split Decision
Aftermath of Super Tuesday Split Decision
Republicans held their Super Tuesday election contests earlier this week and despite media build-up, it was a decidedly split decision. As IVN reported earlier, this split means the Republican primary season is likely to stretch much longer. With the results of 10 races, four facts were re-established. Ohio Primary Voters Reject Extremism Senator Santorum is losing because he has major and substantial on-going problems with Catholic voters – particularly Catholic women voters who are turned of

Raw Milk Consumers Trust Farmers Over Health Officials
Raw Milk Consumers Trust Farmers Over Health Officials
Forget 'crying over it,' the way federal health officials portray the potential health risks of unprocessed milk might have some scrambling for a HazMat suit and respirator if faced with an overturned glass. However, a new study puts into stark relief the disconnect between the government who says: “raw milk, unconscionably bad,” and raw milk consumers who categorically respond with: “but its good for me”. That there is a segment of the American population which actually prefers to drink milk i

Hacking the Polls: Vulnerability in Electronic Voting Systems
Hacking the Polls: Vulnerability in Electronic Voting Systems
Among those who advocate for the “modernization” of our voting systems, internet-based electronic voting and registration platforms are often offered as an ideal solution to the problems inherent in our current registration and voting processes. A newly published paper describes the ease with which a small group of researchers was able to hack a Washington D.C. based internet voting pilot project, demonstrating that these new systems are not ready for take-off. In 2010, the Washington D.C. Board

Santorum takes “Know Nothing-ism” to new heights
It’s easy to be critical of Rick Santorum from the other side of the fence, but some logical supporters are ready to abandon him as well for his ludicrous position on education. Santorum took umbrage with President Obama’s urging of every current high school student to seek at least some form of higher education.  Here are the actual words from Obama’s first address to the joint houses of Congress on February 4, 2009: It is our responsibility as lawmakers and educators to make this system work

It's all about the delegates...
Google Elections “WASHINGTON - Mitt Romney’s victory in Michigan’s primary won’t get him many more delegates than Rick Santorum, if any. It’s even possible Santorum could win most of the state’s delegates. With 22 of the state’s 30 delegates decided, Romney and Santorum each have 11. Michigan awards most of its delegates based on results in each of its 14 congressional districts — handing out two for winning each district. Incomplete results in the four remaining congressional districts show
