The race for California’s Assembly District 79 is an all-Democratic contest between Colin Parent and LaShae Sharp-Collins, in a district that has become a stronghold for progressive politics.

Located in San Diego County (mostly east of the City of San Diego), AD79 is characterized by its diverse population and growing influence within the state’s political landscape. It includes several immigrant and refugee communities connected by shared interests such as affordable housing, commercial centers, and community-based organizations.

Voter registration in the district leans heavily Democratic at 46%. No Party Preference voters (NPPs) edge out Republicans 25% to 22%, meaning the candidates will have to win over numerous NPP voters to emerge victorious on Election Day.

Threading that needle without alienating their more progressive base of Democratic support will be interesting to watch, political insiders say.

Parent leads Sharp-Collins in fundraising but has been plagued by conflict-of-interest reports over his dual roles as both a local lawmaker and the CEO of a politically charitable non-profit that engages in a high level of lobbying activity, according to East County Magazine.

Both Sharp-Collins and Parent are established political figures with deep connections to the community. As they vie for the seat, the race has become a referendum on the future direction of the district, with each candidate offering a distinct vision for how best to represent AD79’s residents.

Current Assemblymember Akilah Weber is vacating the seat to run for state Senate.

Parent, a La Mesa city councilmember, is a non-profit leader and community organizer who has positioned himself as a pragmatic progressive with a balanced approach to governance that prioritizes both social justice and economic development.

Parent’s campaign has focused on road repairs, addressing the needs of working families, improving public education, and fostering economic growth.

More Choice for San Diego

Parent’s platform includes plans to expand access to quality education, support small businesses, and invest in road maintenance and repairs. He has garnered endorsements from labor unions, education advocacy groups, and several elected leaders including US Rep. Scott Peters and Assemblymember David Alvarez.

“Our district needs a representative who can bring people together to solve problems and create opportunities for all,” Parent stated at a recent town hall meeting.

LaShae Sharp-Collins: The Hometown Progressive

LaShae Sharp-Collins

Sharp-Collins is a longtime advocate for social justice and environmental sustainability who has built a reputation as a fierce advocate for marginalized communities. She has focused her campaign on issues such as affordable housing, healthcare access, and climate action.

Her platform includes ambitious proposals for expanding social services, promoting clean energy, and reforming the criminal justice system.

Sharp-Collins has received endorsements from a wide range of progressive organizations, environmental groups, and social justice advocates and state leaders, including Secretary of State Dr. Shirley Weber and state Senator Toni Atkins.

“Our district deserves a representative who will fight tirelessly for equity, justice, and a sustainable future,” Sharp-Collins said during a recent rally.

What’s at Stake?

The AD79 race is a key contest within the Democratic Party, as it will determine who will lead this influential district in San Diego County.

The outcome may reflect whether NPP and Republican voters feel more comfortable with a progressive that pitches pragmatism, or a progressive that touts her community connections.

More Choice for San Diego

As the general election approaches, both candidates are expected to ramp up their efforts to engage with voters, particularly NPP voters and those who are undecided between the two Democrats.

With AD79 being a solidly Democratic district, the winner of this primary contest will likely shape the future legislative agenda for the area.
