Online protests of anti-piracy legislation rock the establishment
Online protests of anti-piracy legislation rock the establishment
This week’s internet community protests against congressional anti-piracy legislation was monumental. In a crucial election year- as Congress already faces unprecedented public disgust- they couldn’t have happened at a more opportune time. Wednesday’s protests against the House’s Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Senate’s Protect IP Act (PIPA) made headlines for facilitating deep citizen engagement. The tangible results are based on reliable online metrics and not on a controlled sample. T

Presidential Election 2012 Update: January 19, 2012
A periodic review of the current presidential election campaigns: And then there were four. Just two days before the South Carolina primary, Rick Perry publicly announces his withdrawal from the race for presidency, leaving Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul, Mitt Romney, and Rick Santorum the four standing contenders for the 2012 Republican candidacy. While acknowledging his imperfections, the Texas Governor endorsed former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich by naming him a "conservative leader who can b

Polls show Ron Paul emerging as key player in 2012 race
Polls show Ron Paul emerging as key player in 2012 race
A new poll finds that a third-party bid by presidential hopeful Ron Paul would help re-elect president Obama, but not before taking away 9% of the President's independent support and 17% of independent voters from Romney. In a separate poll, Paul was found to be competitive against Obama in a head-to-head contest as the GOP nominee. In a hypothetical three-way race, the Pew Research Center found that Obama would garner support from 44% of registered voters, Mitt Romney would get 32% support, an

Court denies Perry et al. ballot access in Virginia
In Virginia, the Republican presidential primary is officially a two person race. Only two candidates for the Republican presidential nomination will appear on Virginia's primary ballot in March: Mitt Romney and Ron Paul. On Tuesday, the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals denied a motion filed by Rick Perry seeking an injunction that would have ordered the Virginia Board of Elections to allow his name to appear on the state's primary ballot. Perry filed the suit on December 27, four days after the

This could be California's driest year on record
This could be California's driest year on record
The Sierras have had practically no snow this year. Lake Tahoe, which relies on skiing for income, has no ski areas operating at full capacity. Some only have 30% of their lifts open. Last year, they had 50 feet of snow in some places. The Sierra Nevada is at a mere 14% of normal snowpack. The southern California Metropolitan Water District (MWD) says this could be the driest year on record. This isn’t just happening in California. It’s been exceptionally warm and dry across the nation. Flowers

Internet activists take on SOPA: A lesson for Independents?
Controversial anti-piracy legislation in Congress has recently hit a snag, one that can largely be attributed to the internet community’s intense activism. California Congressman Darrell Issa, the House’s Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chair, announced Saturday the postponement of a hearing about some of the most contested portions of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). The cancellation comes along with assurances from House Majority Leader Eric Cantor that the legislation won’t move t

California's central role in the Republican presidential primary
California's central role in the Republican presidential primary
It's a much different electoral landscape in 2012 for the Republican Party.  It's a landscape in which California plays a central role in the presidential nominating process, not because its primary comes early like New Hampshire or South Carolina, but because its primary comes so late in the process... and has the most delegates up for grabs. The "front-loading" trend that has pushed state nominating elections earlier and earlier each election cycle hasn't prevented California from "back-loadi

Addressing the depletion of natural resources
Addressing the depletion of natural resources
Texas is currently suffering its worst drought in recorded history with much of it in what the U.S. Drought Monitor classifies as D3, Extreme Drought, or D4, Exceptional Drought. Several municipalities are in danger of completely running out of water in less than six months. Some may have no water in fewer than 50 days. This is much worse than a water shortage where severe rationing goes into effect. They are facing the possibility of no water at all. You turn on the tap and nothing comes out.

After Iowa
After Iowa
So the Iowa caucus has come and gone for the 2012 election.  Does it really mean anything in the overall grand scheme of things?  Not really.  The Iowa voters don't necessarily pick the candidate that will eventually be the nominee.  And when it comes to the voting demographic in Iowa, it does not come close to being an accurate representation of the overall national voting demographic.  Regardless, though, Iowa goes first... as it has since 1972.  And though it might not pick the winner all the
