One Thing We Can All Agree On: Gerrymandering Sucks
One Thing We Can All Agree On: Gerrymandering Sucks
Everybody hates gerrymandering. That’s the takeaway from a new poll that finds dramatic majorities of Americans in favor of limiting the ability of politicians and partisans to draw their own districts. The survey – a bipartisan poll conducted by Democratic researcher Celinda Lake and Republican analyst Ashlee Rich Stephenson – found that 71 percent of Americans would like the Supreme Court to define a standard that ends extreme partisan gerrymandering. This cuts across party lines: 80 percent

Could This Corn Belt State Have Its First Independent Governor?
Could This Corn Belt State Have Its First Independent Governor?
Nebraska State Senator Bob Krist made two big moves Wednesday: (1) He switched his party affiliation from Republican to independent, and (2) he announced he is running for governor. Krist, a retired Air Force veteran, has served in Nebraska's unique unicameral legislature for 10 years. Yet during that time, he says the once nonpartisan chamber has succumbed to the same partisan-driven politics in Washington. “Voters are fed up with partisan politics that divide us rather than unite us. The Neo-Independent: The Questions are Blowin’ in the Wind
The Neo-Independent: The Questions are Blowin’ in the Wind
Crazy times in America these days.  The wrathful hurricanes pounding the South and the East Coast and the wildfires devouring the Northwest echo our storm-tossed politics. Everything is turned upside down, everything is fevered, everything is being washed away. And yet (and this is the craziest thing of all) nothing seems to change. Nobel Prize winner Bob Dylan once observed, you don’t need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows. True that. If you’re an independent, you can lick your fi

Competition is the American way. In business, you hear the following saying: “If we don’t take care of the customer, somebody else will.” As a nation, back to Teddy Roosevelt’s trust-busting and before, we’ve been well trained to distrust monopolies, or even situations where competition is limited to a handful of providers. We have about eight major airlines in the U.S., and that choice is often painful enough. But would we ever let our airlines merge such that there were just two? How about o

Trump's Tax Plan: Will it Actually Affect The Working Class?

Debt Ceiling Duel: President Sides with Dems; 3 House GOP Members Say No
419-3. Three Republicans voted against a bill that, in part, provides $7.85 billion in emergency financial assistance to the victims of Hurricane Harvey. Michigan Rep. Justin Amash, Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie, and Arizona Rep. Andy Biggs said no to the aid package. Minutes before the vote, Amash tweeted that funding for the disaster relief should be offset instead of being added to the deficit. https://twitter.com/justinamash/status/905465795416862720 Trump Sides with Democrats It’s alre

A Fiscal Cliff? More Like A Political One
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfjWIpnfjgQ As voters, we’ll be asked to ignore the dereliction of duty demonstrated by our elected leaders; threatened with horrible outcomes if a federal budget isn’t passed and the debt ceiling isn’t increased; then, suffer through the traditional blame game, where the two major parties take turns distorting the truth and casting aspersions at each other in an attempt to gain a political advantage in next year’s midterm elections. As I’ve said in the past, pe
