Agreement in Reach on Decades-Long Yakima River Water War
Credit: usbr.gov
The Yakima River in Washington, like the Colorado River and the Sacramento Delta, has been the focus of nasty, divisive water wars for years. But it now appears that a landmark agreement is within reach for the Yakima. This gives hope to other areas where disputes over water seem to never be resolved. Sometimes warring sides really can come together and make peace. The Yakima Basin Integrated Plan is a model of cooperation that shows others how to resolve their differences for

Key to Swing State Voters: Stagnant vs Growing Economy
Credit: Purple Strategies Purple Poll July 2012
In a new Purple Poll released today, voters in 12 swing states diverge dramatically on their views of the country's economic trajectory. This overwhelmingly affects who they plan on casting their ballot for in November.
"Among those who believe the economy is getting better, 93% support Obama, 4% favor Romney. And among those who say it is getting worse, Romney leads Obama 84% to 7%," says the Purple Strategies findings.

UN Conference on Arms Trade Treaty Underway
The United Nations is currently debating the content of an arms trade treaty, which would cover not only what most people would think of as weapons of war, but also "small arms," which includes rifles and carbines in the UN Register of Conventional Arms. In a joint statement by France, the UK, Germany, and Sweden:
"We believe that an arms trade treaty should cover all types of conventional weapons, notably including small arms and light weapons, all types of munitions, and related technologies.

Congress' Approval Rating Lower Than: BP Oil Spill, Lawyers, IRS
File this under the oldie but goodie section. Found this graph presented by Senator Michael Bennet of Colorado to the 112th Congress. The Democratic Senator was kind enough to present this to the Republican controlled House. Yes, Congress' approval rating is higher than Castro, but is getting smoked by the IRS, the BP oil spill, and Nixon during watergate.
Aside from Congress' approval rating being so low, who knew that lawyers were so high? Just made my morning.
Big congratulations to the IRS

Chris Christie's Drug War Remarks Belie His Solutions
As recently reported, New Jersey’s Governor Chris Christie did what so many politicians are still unwilling to do: He called the War on Drugs a failure. In a speech at the Brookings Institution, Christie claimed that despite the benevolent intentions behind forty plus years of the drug war, the policy is ultimately a disaster: "We're warehousing addicted people every day in state prisons in New Jersey, giving them no treatment," Christie said during his speech. To belabor the point, the governor

Independent Surge in Swing States
Key swing states have seen a surge in independent voters, with Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire, and North Carolina adding a collective 443,000 independents to their voter demographic. And while the number of voters registering as Republicans steadily increases, Democrats have seen a decline in the number of voters registering with their party.
Why? Voters are frustrated.
“Independents are really just fed up with both parties. Most elections are about the center and that’s where

Colorado Voters Have a Vibrant Independent Streak
Colorado is leading the way concerning several policies, and may eventually be a good model for other states for how to take divisive issues and hold positive and creative dialogue among the stakeholders (constituents). At least that is what I think thus far in our journey around the state. Colorado, in general, has a diverse mix of voters (713,506 Democrats; 829,259 Republicans; 668,182 Independents), which makes Colorado a swing State– a testing ground for ideas, and a stomping ground for inde
