The Morning Report: July 21, 2017
Senate Republicans threw a curveball into the complicated Obamacare repeal vote. The GOP introduced yet another amendment to their bill to replace the Affordable Care Act. The new version, posted on a Senate website, removes the so-called Cruz amendment. Authored by Texas Senator Ted Cruz, the amendment would have allowed insurers to sell much-less-generous, and hence less expensive, individual health plans. It's not clear if that amendment will remain out of the bill as Senate Republican leader

FBI, Feds Step Up Sanders Investigation
A story in the Washington Post says the federal investigation into a land deal led by Jane Sanders, the wife and political adviser of Sen. Bernie Sanders, has accelerated. Prosecutors have reportedly hauled off with more than a dozen boxes of records from the Vermont college she once ran and calling a state official to testify before a grand jury. The investigation centers on the 2010 land purchase that relocated Burlington College to a new campus on more than 32 acres along Lake Champlain. W

Congress Effectively Legalizes Medical Marijuana at the Federal Level
Congress Effectively Legalizes Medical Marijuana at the Federal Level
Last week, Congress avoided a government shutdown by agreeing to a continuing resolution to keep the federal government funded for another week. Then over the weekend, US lawmakers agreed to a deal that will extend funding through September while Congress and the White House continue to negotiate longer-term fiscal policy priorities. The US House passed the budget deal Wednesday. But amidst Washington's annual kabuki theater dance around fiscal policy and possible government shutdowns, a litt

OPINION: Nonviolent Ex-Felons Should Have Their Voting Rights Restored
OPINION: Nonviolent Ex-Felons Should Have Their Voting Rights Restored
Democracy In America Many view voting as a right, but others view it as a privilege. The United States is a nation abundant with laws that unquestionably deny many citizens certain rights, and felon disenfranchisement is a prime example of that. Nationwide, millions of felony convicted Americans are denied the right to vote and there is strong correlation among those most affected and the voter turnout in elections. In Florida, a petition is currently circulating with the hopes of restoring t

Bernie Sanders: An Independent In Name Only?
Bernie Sanders: An Independent In Name Only?
I voted for Bernie Sanders. Not because I’m a liberal. Not for any particular ideological reason, actually. I voted for Bernie Sanders in the primary because, to me, he represented the only real challenge to the Democratic AND Republican Party establishment that continues to put their own partisan interests and rhetoric ahead of actually governing. In Bernie Sanders, we had the first presidential candidate who talked about things that mattered to non-partisan voters. Money in politics is impo

The Revolution Within: Berniecrats Take Over California Democratic Party
The Revolution Within: Berniecrats Take Over California Democratic Party
In December, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi told CBS’s Face the Nation that she didn’t think people wanted a new direction for the Democratic Party. But recently, voters in California sent Pelosi quite the opposite message. On January 7 and 8, elections took place throughout the state of California to elect assembly district delegates. These delegates select the state party’s leadership and vote on endorsements of candidates and propositions. Progressive candidates were elected to over 6

Ranked Choice Voting: An Easy Solution to Fix Our Broken Elections
Ranked Choice Voting: An Easy Solution to Fix Our Broken Elections
This piece, written by Rob Richie, originally appeared in Cato Unbound as the lead essay in a series on ranked choice voting in December of 2016. American democracy today is working more poorly than it has in generations. Even as the toxic 2016 presidential campaign featured the two most unpopular major party candidates in modern history and Congress has historic lows in approval, minor party presidential challengers were marginalized, and nearly 98% of congressional incumbents won re-election.
