Although California has slipped from the top spot of providing the most cold-weather farmers' markets, USDA statistics reveal that the Golden State maintains its leading role in the local food movement by having the second highest number of winter markets for direct farm-to-consumer sales.
According to the Agriculture Department’s updated National Farmers Market Directory, there are 7,222 U.S. farmers' markets. About 83 percent of these venues are only open during spring and summer months, but

Happy New Year: 40,000 new laws to take effect in 2012

According to the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL), about 40,000 new laws will go into effect in 2012, and that doesn't include laws and provisions within laws that will also take effect this year on a federal level. Though in some ways, some of the new laws to take effect mi

Republican Tea Party may have produced Democratic Re-occupation
There is an age old lesson in American politics that both political party loyalist just can't seem to get in their heads. Americans are fundamentally fair minded, skeptical of philosophers, and wish death on zealots and bullies.
The Democrats took it on the chin in 2010 after Democrats ran rough shod over Republicans in Congress. Tuesday night was the first hint that Republicans may pay the price for over reaching, some might argue "radical" agendas embraced in the euphoria of those wins. Acros

Governor Brown proposes major public pension changes
The non-partisan Little Hoover Commission reported in February that the ten biggest pension funds for California public workers face a coming shortfall of $240 billion. These benefits are mandated, must be paid (unless renegotiated), and obviously will decimate the budgets of governments already heavily impacted by budget cuts.
Unions predictably said the report was skewed because it was based on 2008 data, which was during the market crash. But isn't that precisely a telling example of why the
