Taxpayers Continue to Flee States with Heaviest Tax Burdens
United Van Lines (UVL) is one of the largest moving companies in the United States. Each year since 1977, UVL has issued a study of interstate migration patterns. This study reports the share of outbound shipments in total interstate shipments for UVL for each of the 48 “Lower United States” (e.g. all states but Alaska and Hawaii). We include this data in State Data Lab, along with a wide variety of other economic, demographic, and government financial data.
On January 2 2014, UVL publicly rele

7 Most 'Independent' Politicians in 2013
2013 was an 'off' year politically for the vast majority of Americans. There was no presidential election where one-liners like "I've got binders full of women" or "you didn't build that" were drilled into the American psyche. Similarly, the most exciting politician wasn't even an American. Toronto Mayor Rob Ford takes that category hands down.
Yet, 7 politicians stuck out this year as the most 'independent.' For this list, independent means going outside a particular party's interest for bette

Retiring New Jersey Congressman Leaves Seat Up For Grabs in 2014
When Jon Runyan (R-N.J.) decided not to seek re-election in the 2014 congressional race for New Jersey’s third district, his seat immediately became one of most competitive districts in the country.
Runyan, a two-term congressman and former NFL offensive lineman, easily won re-election in 2012 with 53.8 percent of the vote. His popularity spoke across party lines as President Obama also won that district with 52 percent of the vote.
Now, the seat is wide open for the 2014 midterm election with

New Jersey Spends Nearly $100 Per Voter in 2013 Primary Elections
Much has been made of the cost of New Jersey’s special senatorial election this past year, which saw Cory Booker elected to replace Frank Lautenberg as the Garden State's second representative to the Senate.
Montclair Deputy Mayor Bob Russo was just one politician among many from both the Democratic and Republican parties to call the elections a “complete waste of taxpayer money."
In Chris Christie’s attempt to keep a galvanized Democratic base away from his own re-election bid, he scheduled a

10 Names Behind Money In Politics You Don't Know
There are basically five ways for money to flow into politics; well, six if you include the revolving door -- oh wait -- there's also the spousal side door and family back door — so that makes seven. The following is a list of the top 10 individuals who donate to 527s, nonprofit, tax-exempt organizations with the primary purpose of influencing elections. Data was collected from the Center for Responsive Politics on OpenSecrets.org, which supplies a wealth — pun intended — of information.

Over 33% of Population Lives in a State Where Gay Marriage is Legal
Last week, both Illinois and Hawaii passed same-sex marriage making them the 15th and 16th states to do so. Overall, 2013 has been quite a year for the LGBT community. These last two states just seem to put the icing on the proverbial cake.
It all comes on the heals of the 2012 election where voters in three states (Maine, Maryland, and Washington) approved same-sex marriage and rejected a ban on it in the state of Minnesota.
So, what has transpired during the year?

4 Ways Independent Voters Can Be More Independent
Independent voters like to do their thinking outside the narrow confines of false dichotomies and established paradigms. They don’t like their choices made for them, they’re weary of a debate that never seems to go anywhere, and they’re bored of the made-for-television drama that partisan politics has become.
But if you’re an Independent voter, you can declare your independence in other areas too.
Independent voters can also be:

15 States Now Legally Recognize Gay Marriages
While much focus was put on the major gubernatorial and mayoral races across the nation on Tuesday, Illinois lawmakers approved the legalization of same-sex marriage. The law will go before Governor Pat Quinn who is expected to make Illinois the fifteenth state to allow gay couples to wed.
Currently, Illinois allows civil unions for same-sex couples, but for many the law didn't go far enough to ensure equal rights for all couples. The legalization of same-sex marriage in Illinois comes not even

Christie Todd Whitman Supports Open Primaries, Inclusive Politics
Two-term New Jersey Governor Christie Todd Whitman has never been a typical Republican. As one of the most recognizable faces in the GOP during the 1990s, she was a speculated
Vice Presidential candidate, who made a name for herself as an advocate of fiscal conservatism, minus the socially restrictive policies that often accompany monetary responsibility. Her environmentalist tendencies, typically associated with progressives, led to the former Governor becoming Administrator of the Environment
