Presidential Election 2012 Update: January 19, 2012
A periodic review of the current presidential election campaigns: And then there were four. Just two days before the South Carolina primary, Rick Perry publicly announces his withdrawal from the race for presidency, leaving Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul, Mitt Romney, and Rick Santorum the four standing contenders for the 2012 Republican candidacy. While acknowledging his imperfections, the Texas Governor endorsed former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich by naming him a "conservative leader who can b

Polls show Ron Paul emerging as key player in 2012 race
Polls show Ron Paul emerging as key player in 2012 race
A new poll finds that a third-party bid by presidential hopeful Ron Paul would help re-elect president Obama, but not before taking away 9% of the President's independent support and 17% of independent voters from Romney. In a separate poll, Paul was found to be competitive against Obama in a head-to-head contest as the GOP nominee. In a hypothetical three-way race, the Pew Research Center found that Obama would garner support from 44% of registered voters, Mitt Romney would get 32% support, an

This could be California's driest year on record
This could be California's driest year on record
The Sierras have had practically no snow this year. Lake Tahoe, which relies on skiing for income, has no ski areas operating at full capacity. Some only have 30% of their lifts open. Last year, they had 50 feet of snow in some places. The Sierra Nevada is at a mere 14% of normal snowpack. The southern California Metropolitan Water District (MWD) says this could be the driest year on record. This isn’t just happening in California. It’s been exceptionally warm and dry across the nation. Flowers

Tea Party Republicans well-informed about GOP presidential field
Tea Party Republicans, and even Republican-leaning Independents, know more about the current GOP presidential candidates than Republican voters who disagree with or have no opinion of the Tea Party movement.  According to a survey released Thursday by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press, 73% who classify themselves as Republican and who agree with the Tea Party movement correctly answered at least three of four questions posed about certain candidates, while 53% answered all fou

California's central role in the Republican presidential primary
California's central role in the Republican presidential primary
It's a much different electoral landscape in 2012 for the Republican Party.  It's a landscape in which California plays a central role in the presidential nominating process, not because its primary comes early like New Hampshire or South Carolina, but because its primary comes so late in the process... and has the most delegates up for grabs. The "front-loading" trend that has pushed state nominating elections earlier and earlier each election cycle hasn't prevented California from "back-loadi

Poll: Majority of Republicans unsatisfied with current field of presidential candidates
As primary season rolls on, a recent CBS poll of Republican voters finds that they are not satisfied with the current crop of GOP presidential candidates.  According to the survey, 58% of Republican voters want more candidate choices even with the presidential selection process already in motion.  That’s up 12% since October 2011. Only 37% of the voters polled are satisfied with the current field vying for the nomination. Back in June 2011, 71% of Republican primary voters expressed the desire

Unaffiliated voters could make a splash in New Hampshire primary
With the Iowa caucuses now behind the Republican presidential field of candidates, most of them have now moved on to brave the political wilderness known as New Hampshire- a small, but significant state where unaffiliated voters can show up in droves to make their voices heard in the nation’s first official primary of election season.   It’s distinct from the recently held Iowa caucuses, which follows a complex voting and delegate selection process. What makes New Hampshire noteworthy to watch

After Iowa
After Iowa
So the Iowa caucus has come and gone for the 2012 election.  Does it really mean anything in the overall grand scheme of things?  Not really.  The Iowa voters don't necessarily pick the candidate that will eventually be the nominee.  And when it comes to the voting demographic in Iowa, it does not come close to being an accurate representation of the overall national voting demographic.  Regardless, though, Iowa goes first... as it has since 1972.  And though it might not pick the winner all the
