Voter ID a hot topic in state legislatures
Voter turnout in the United States is disturbingly low. In the 2008 presidential election, voter turnout was higher than it had been in a generation, but barely 60% of eligible voters bothered to cast a ballot. In non-presidential election years, the numbers are even worse, with over 60% of eligible voters opting not to vote. Given these dismal numbers, one would think that states across the country would seek to implement policies that would encourage participation in the electoral process. Ins

Why are there more independent voters today than perhaps ever before? Is it because people are fed up with the party first and the nation second mentality of incumbents?

California ‘Amazon tax’ looks like a money grab
Ordinarily, if a large corporation has a physical presence in a state, then that state can charge sales tax on transactions. California, in a desperate attempt to raise more money, has decreed that Internet transactions are now taxable even if the company has no physical presence in California and the goods were shipped from, say, Nevada to Missouri.
Yes, the great minds of the California legislature have decided that if you or a charity or a little mom-and-pop business use affiliate marketing

California places 48th in national freedom index
The Mercatus Center at George Mason University has published an update and a revision of a 2007 study entitled “Freedom in the 50 States: An Index of Personal and Economic Freedom”. The report analyzed three primary “freedom variables” for each state, determining the overall burden that local and state policies place on individual residents.
So how did California stack up? Frankly, not so good. In fact, California was only underperformed by New Jersey and New York.

Monsanto is the real food terror threat
Acting on information from a “key intelligence source,” CBS News claimed that terrorists are trying to poison our food supply on Monday. This may come as a shock, but some researchers have already identified several thriving “food-terror cells” who've been operating from within our borders for years. One is based in St. Louis, Missouri under the cover of a trans-national chemical manufacturer turned bio tech firm. It turns out that Monsanto has been poisoning Americans with the FDA's approval fo

The art of mortgage fraud
How do you get official approval of large-scale fraud, theft, and racketeering? You become a mortgage originator (i.e. a “Too-big-To-Fail bank”) like me. No really, it's simple. Let me walk you through the scheme:
First, you wait for the right time. When the Federal Reserve lowers interest rates artificially to a level which encourages rampant “borrowing,” that's a green light (I have placed the term borrowing in quotes because if you research the matter enough, you will discover that you, the

Paramilitary police raids abusing civil liberties as 40-year War on Drugs drags on
A recent youtube video of a SWAT team raid on a Missouri family's home has gone viral. In it, police institute a “quick-knock” technique to serve a search warrant. Upon forcing their way into the house, gun shots can immediately be heard as police execute one of the family dogs and injure another (a corgi). The suspect's wife and seven year-old child watched the horrific scene unfold.
The homeowner was suspected of being a marijuana distributer, but when all was said and done, the police foun

Schwarzenegger's waning influence could impact ballot initiatives in 2010 elections
The legacy of Governor Schwarzenegger is still very much a work in progress. On the one hand, he can be counted as the first Governor of California since Ronald Reagan to come from Hollywood and yet still manage to formulate a gubernatorial philosophy – one which his supporters believe is more nuanced and intellectually coherent than the Gipper’s.
On the other hand, California has suffered some of the most debilitating fiscal woes in recent history under his watch, and as Republican Governors
