Marriage Equality in 2012: Uruguay and the U.S. Make Strides

On December 11, 2012, Uruguay's House overwhelmingly voted to approve marriage equality in the country. The Senate was scheduled to vote on the bill on December 26, and commentators widely expected the chamber to easily pass the legislation. However, at the last minute, opponents of the bill asked for a postponement on the vote to allow for more public debate. President José Mujica has said he will sign the bill into law as soon as it reaches his desk.

Waiting for the End of the World in 2012
For nearly twenty five years, December 21, 2012 has been the talk of soothsayers and oracles, all of whom forecast a worldwide event that will, in one way or another, change the face of the planet.
This has led people of every religion to envision their own idea of what may or may not happen at this juncture in time. Christians, of course, presuppose that December 21 could be their long awaited rapture, perhaps ignoring a simultaneous view that the Lord said no one knows the day or the hour.

Five More States Secure Early Learning Challenge Grants

San Diego City Council Addresses Financial Issues

On Monday, November 26, San Diego City Council met (after having been adjourned Thanksgiving week) to discuss, among other items of business, key financial issues to the city.
Council's first item of business was the presentation of outgoing Mayor Sanders' five-year budget outlook report, which had been prepared by the city's Independent Budget Analyst (IBA), Andrea Tevlin. Council voted unanimously to accept the IBA report at Monday's meeting.

"I want to be part of the national debate. I think it's a little too soon to talk about who's going to run, who's not going to run. . . . Am I interested in thinking about that? Yes. . . . I'm not going to deny I'm interested."
