Texas Legislature Eliminates Straight-Ticket Voting
The Texas House approved a bill Saturday that eliminates straight-ticket voting, which allows voters to choose a party's entire slate of candidates in a single ballot marking. Texas will likely become the second state in 2017 to eliminate straight-ticket voting, following Iowa. The bill, HB 25, originated in the state House, and was initially approved by the chamber in early May. However, before passing the Senate, an amendment was added to the bill that required the bill to go back to the Hous

Congress Effectively Legalizes Medical Marijuana at the Federal Level
Last week, Congress avoided a government shutdown by agreeing to a continuing resolution to keep the federal government funded for another week. Then over the weekend, US lawmakers agreed to a deal that will extend funding through September while Congress and the White House continue to negotiate longer-term fiscal policy priorities. The US House passed the budget deal Wednesday. But amidst Washington's annual kabuki theater dance around fiscal policy and possible government shutdowns, a litt

Atlanta, Georgia – In three counties just north of Atlanta, voters are heading to the polls for a special election Tuesday. How Will The Trump Presidency Affect My Retirement?
How Will The Trump Presidency Affect My Retirement?
President Trump has employed people, had companies set up with retirement plans and many people employed by him are living off his companies' retirement packages. Certainly, he has kept these things in mind while settling into the White House, but his tax plan is what people nearing retirement should really consider and base their expectations on. The challenge is that - even with weeks of being a fairly active executive, we're still largely unsure of the type of president we have elected. Here

Is Donald Trump the Most Powerful President Elect Ever?
Is Donald Trump the Most Powerful President Elect Ever?
Donald Trump is one of, if not the most, active president-elects in recent history. For better or worse, since November 8th Donald Trump has in many ways already assumed the office of President of the United States. It is common for all president-elects to name their cabinet members, do interviews, buy a pet to bring to the white house, etc. in the days leading to Inauguration Day. However, in keeping with his unconventional style, Trump is redefining what it means to be president-elect. Since

The States Likely to Gain and Lose House Seats in 2020

Their forecast, shown below, has nine states losing one U.S. House seat and six states gaining seats. These are only projections, but given that we are now six years into the decade, many of the demographic shifts of the decade are already well advanced and difficult to reverse. Overall, we see a reduced n

Rand Paul Says Hillary Camp Should Take Responsibility for Sloppiness
In an interview with NPR's David Greene, U.S. Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) said U.S. intelligence should investigate claims that Russia tried to insert itself into the 2016 presidential election. However, he added that voters didn't vote for Donald Trump because of propaganda or hacking -- they voted against the policies of the status quo. I can tell you in my state of Kentucky, 70 percent of eastern Kentucky voted for Donald Trump not because the Russians told them to but because they were upset

Harry Reid and the Democratic Leadership Still Don't Get It
In an appearance on CNN, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid suggested that FBI Director James Comey played an integral role in the election of Donald Trump, saying his actions handed the Republican nominee the election. Reid says the FBI and Comey had information on Donald Trump, and refused to release it to the public. "It's obvious he (Comey) was a partisan in all this," Reid said in the interview with CNN's Manu Raju. "There's information out there. He had it, I'm confident. And he ignored it
