Morning Report: July 25, 2017
President Donald Trump made a last-ditch plea to U.S. Senate Republicans Monday to fulfill seven years of campaign promises to repeal and replace former President Barack Obama's signature health care law. The Senate will vote today on whether to open debate on an overhaul of the law, with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell promising an open amendment process and a "robust" debate. President Trump said, "To every member of the Senate I say this: The American people have waited long enough.

League of Women Voters Keeps National Popular Vote Movement Alive in Colorado
League of Women Voters Keeps National Popular Vote Movement Alive in Colorado
After each presidential election in which the popular vote winner and the Electoral College winner differ, the country revisits the question, “Why do we still have the Electoral College?” Opponents of the Electoral College argue that basing the winner on the college leads candidates to focus only on swing states, which leaves out most of the country. For example, 94% of the 2016 presidential campaign events (375 of the 399) took place in only twelve states. Two-thirds (273 of 399) of the gener

44 States Stand Up to the White House? Not Quite...
The biggest headline this week on President Donald Trump's election integrity commission is that 44 states plus DC have partly or fully rejected the commission's request for a broad array of personal voter data if it is publicly available per state law. Source: NBCNews.com Source: Forbes Source: Vox From the headlines alone, this seems like a major, bipartisan rejection of the commission's request for personal voter data. OPINION: Liberals Must Reflect on Failure with Humility
OPINION: Liberals Must Reflect on Failure with Humility
Liberals in America have been dealt some heavy blows in the past few decades. The impeachment of Bill Clinton, losing the 2000 election by a Supreme Court verdict, the Tea Party, partisan gerrymandering, and Russian interference in the 2016 election. Largely, liberals have maintained a quiet humility. In the words of Michelle Obama, it has been an "if they go low, you go high" strategy. Perhaps the election of Donald Trump, over liberal darling Hillary Clinton, was the last straw. Simmering 'l

Sadly, The Only Winner in Georgia's Special Election Is Hyper-Partisanship
Sadly, The Only Winner in Georgia's Special Election Is Hyper-Partisanship
There is one message that voters are getting in Georgia's 6th Congressional District (and elections across the country): Be angry. Reports ahead of Tuesday's election show a 150 percent increase in early voter turnout. That is impressive, but many are attributing this turnout to people coming out in anger. It is anger at Donald Trump or anger at outside Democrats trying to influence the election. Either way, this election has been about tapping into people's fury and even exacerbating it. Now
