We the People: From the Past to a New American Revolution
"I heard the singing of the Mississippi when Abe Lincoln went down to New Orleans, and I've seen its muddy bosom turn all golden in the sunset."
- Langston Hughes
In February, I traveled from New York City, where I live, to New Orleans to attend the Unrig the System Summit, a gathering of over 1,500 people from all 50 states, focused on how to reform our dysfunctional political system.
I was there to speak on a panel about the leadership of the African American community in the fight for full

#HealthyGov: 6 Groups That Are Changing Politics in America
“We spend most of our time focused on what’s wrong with our government and talking about the dysfunction or breakdowns in a critical way. With all that attention on what we DON’T want, we spend little time focused on what’s working and what we DO want. #HealthyGov is about shifting our focus to what we want and taking action to make it so.” - Debilyn Molineaux, co-director of Bridge Alliance
Bridge Alliance, a coalition of over 80 civic action organizations, launched the #HealthyGov education c

Unite America Director: History Will Be Made In November
We are only three months into 2018, but already big things are happening within the independent movement -- especially in Colorado.
Unite America (formerly the Centrist Project) recently launched with an ambitious goal: to elect enough independents to shift the balance of power in several states and in DC away from the Republican and Democratic Parties, and give a voice back to the people.
It's an enormous undertaking. The political movement launched with a historic national slate of independe

Small Town May Strip Partisanship From Local Elections
Most voters, and probably you, too, recognize America’s two-party political system for what it is: a trap.
Red and blue colored ties play good-cop-bad-cop on television for three years at a time while nothing gets done. During the fourth year, they make campaign stops where they sling blame for why nothing got done during the previous three.
Voters in a small town of just under 17 thousand think they may have found have a way out — at least within their city limits. And it could be accomplishe

Two-Party Brain Drain: Why The Nation's Brightest Minds are Fleeing The Parties
In the study of migration patterns, scholars often times point to different “push” and “pull” factors that have influenced migration trends over time.
Historically, the free market structure of the United States’ economy, combined with its stable democracy has been a very strong “pull” factor that has enticed millions of families (including my own) to immigrate here from various corners of the earth.
Conversely, dysfunctional governments that have proven unable to serve their people have histo

Opioids at CPAC - The Ultimate Nonpartisan Issue
Eric Bolling climbed onto the main stage at CPAC and delivered what no one ever wants to have to say.
"I am an accidental opioid expert."
What followed was part eulogy and part straight-up retelling of a massive loss.
Keep in mind that the rest of the speeches I heard at CPAC were mainly partisan jabs at the left, or even the center. But clearly Bolling’s was going to be different.
Bolling detailed how he and his wife got a phone call shortly after his contract was severed with Fox News last

Republican Congressional Candidate Stumps For "Direct Democracy?"
Michael Allman would not be the first politician to attempt a successful campaign based on the idea of "Direct Democracy," but he is the latest. And perhaps most surprising, he is a Republican running on that message.
Also interesting is the fact that California is a top two state meaning the top two finishers in the primary will go on to the general election, regardless of party preference.
I asked Allman if he would be running if California didn't have a Nonpartisan primary, "I would not, a

Why Local Elections Are Now Just As Partisan As National Elections
In a democracy, the people have the power, but only if they choose to wield it. With the mercurial state of America’s representative system in recent elections, it’s becoming clear that more involvement from the people is needed.
However, systems like the Electoral College mean that individuals have only so much leverage at the highest levels of government. To be heard, people must take advantage of their opportunities on the local level.
This is how the system is designed, but we need to make
