Mitt Romney Called Out on His Comments on England
By Amanda Le on 07/26/2012 in england, mitt romney, Social Media with 9 CommentsRead Time: 1 - 2 minutes
Internet users are all about a specific quote Mitt Romney wrote in his most recent book, No Apology.
”England is just a small island. Its roads and houses are small.” – Mitt Romney from his book, No Apology
Whether the statement is true or not, the fact that it has gotten such widespread attention is yet another testament to social media and its power to hold people accountable for what they say and do.
Also, don’t you just love the graphic?

It’s a popular quote contributing to the #romneyshambles hashtag that was trending on Twitter this afternoon. The quote is resurfacing due to the bad press he’s receiving while in London which has blogs/media sites such as The Atlantic and Andrew Sullivan’s blog on The Daily Beast bringing it back up.

Willard, “Show Us the TAX RETURNS!” Your Dad ‘Showed America 12 Years of Tax Returns (to Prove “HE WASN’T A FRAUD.”) In 2008, YOU gave McCain 23 Years of Tax Returns, to be considered his V.P., and he chose Sarah Palin – OVER YOU.. “Show Us those Damn TAX RETURNS!” …….

A fuller quote:
England [sic] is just a small island. Its roads and houses are small. With few exceptions, it doesn’t make things that people in the rest of the world want to buy. And if it hadn’t been separated from the continent by water, it almost certainly would have been lost to Hitler’s ambitions. Yet only two lifetimes ago, Britain ruled the largest and wealthiest empire in the history of humankind. Britain controlled a quarter of the earth’s land and a quarter of the earth’s population.
That’s the most complete version of the quote I’ve been able to find, and that last sentence, which, surprise, surprise, most commentators aren’t including, puts his feeling about England in a more favorable light.

Personally, I still don’t think the fuller quote does Mitt Romney much more justice, but regardless, you make a good point in addressing the dangers of excluding/shortening parts of quotes to make them sound more controversial than they are.

emails with the same comment. Perhaps there is a means you can
remove me from that service? Cheers!
