Measure to Establish Nonpartisan Elections in South Dakota Qualifies for 2016 Ballot

Sioux Falls, SD…South Dakotans for a Nonpartisan Democracy committee chair, Rick Knobe, a registered Independent and regional radio talk show host, said that he was elated that the proposed constitutional amendment to establish a nonpartisan primary was given a ‘green light’ by the South Dakota secretary of state’s Office.

Our democracy is broken. We have this wonderful opportunity to fix it by passing this amendment.

“I think most people are fed up with partisan politics, the bickering, and the lackluster results.” Knobe stated after the Secretary of State’s Office validated 29,924 number of signatures,  2183 over the 27,741 signature requirement. “For too long, both political parties have been shouting over each other at the expense of the voters, and now have an opportunity to do something about it. Just look at the growing number of registered Independents, which now numbers over 100,000 in South Dakota. That number is growing here and across the country. When this measure passes, those 100,000 South Dakotans will have the opportunity to fully participate in the election process.”

The amendment to establish a nonpartisan primary will be on the November 2016 ballot and, if passed, will go into effect in 2018. Instead of separate taxpayer-subsidized party primaries, one open primary will be held where candidates will be chosen based on their ideas and not their party label, allowing the top two vote getters to face each other in the general election.  A similar amendment passed in Nebraska in 1934 and, as a result, Nebraska has the only legislature in the country which is not organized by one of the political parties, and has both Democratic and Republican legislative committee chairs.

“Our democracy is broken. We have this wonderful opportunity to fix it by passing this amendment. It’s time to say no to politics as usual and usher in a new era of reform that puts the voters first, not the party,” Knobe concluded.

South Dakotans for a Nonpartisan Democracy is a broad based and growing coalition made up of Republicans, Democrats and Independents committed to reforming our election process and creating a more cohesive and less partisan government.

Have you seen the news lately? Wow. Some people just see what they want to see. That's how Obama got elected. Turn a blind eye to the things that don't fit your wishes.

As American citizens, I firmly believe we should be allowed to choose our candidates from all those running for office, despite their party affiliations; basically choosing whomever we see as the BEST leader of our people, our military's COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF, and our Ambassador to the whole world (PERIOD).

It's not parties that are the problem, it's the money in politics.

Believe me Patrick I have researched all the candidates. Much of Bernie's legislation and accomplishments can be found on you tube. He recently received the highest award from the veteran's of foreign wars for his fight for veterans.

Funny how many "educated" people think we live in a democracy vs a representative republic.

Educate yourself on your candidate before making your idiocy obvious to the rest of us.

Serve the people. Get rid of the two party system. Create laws that make accepting bribes or being caught in political corruption a capital crime. Use ear protection, there will be an uproar.

How ever, i do agree dens shouldn't vote in repub primaries and visa versa

not a bad idea if you want to resurrect the souls of all dictators throughout history. please read and study actual history and not opinions thereof. then come back. this is NOT democracy. trying to make all people the same is the antithesis of what this country stands for. we need MORE parties, not less. many more.

“Trump for the rebirth of our constitutional freedom our Founding Fathers had envisioned for the American Republic.” Ten Reasons for Supporting Trump 1. Donald Trump is immune to special interest lobbying because he has accepted no donations or special interest money. No other candidate can make this claim. 2. Donald Trump knows how to negotiate. No one builds an international business empire the size of Mr. Trump’s without being able to win at the negotiating table. 3. Donald Trump is an executive. The President of the United States is the Chief Executive Officer of our nation. We don’t need a policy expert or a legislator – we need someone who knows how to run an organization. Mr. Trump is the only candidate who has a proven record as a successful executive on a large scale. 4. Donald Trump is honest. Mr. Trump is a man who tells the truth. He may not always say it in the most polished way, but our country has had enough suave liars. It is time for some straight forward honesty. 5. Donald Trump is decisive. We hear about his having business interests that filed for bankruptcy. In each case, he looked at the situation as it was, and then he cut his losses. We need someone who will look at government programs realistically and if they are failures; will end the wasteful Washington spending. 6. Donald Trump is courageous. Mr. Trump has been viciously attacked by the Washington establishment and the media – and he has not budged one inch. In other words, he is willing to take charge and lead. 7. Donald Trump listens. At Trump Presidential events, the audience gets to actually speak to him without being screened, and he responds without a teleprompter. 8. Donald Trump understands that a nation without borders, language and laws is not a nation. 9. Donald Trump has actually read the Bill of Rights, and is willing to defend its provisions. He is not afraid to speak about Christian persecution, and protecting gun rights. 10. Donald Trump loves this country – and says so. He wants to make America great again (Cut and Paste-Spread the News)

I know, it's just that so many people lately have been calling us a democracy. It makes me crazy. :)

Just the fact that you're calling it a democracy shows just how broken the system really is. Especially when you consider that this country was founded as a constitutional republic

Yep, you're right but the party system is run on a simple majority vote which is non-representative and purely democratic. This is just about Primaries.

The Muslim in the White House or rainbow house needs to be impeached. Giving to foreigners and letting the old people here that have paid taxes go without. I do agree that both parties are crooked and we the people should vote in limited terms in senate and house with only social security no salary after leaving office and no insurance and them along with the pous should have that wonderful Obama care like the citizens after all that is what scots man promised. He also cannot use the word Isis probably because me may be one of them. One Cannot trust him the worst president in the history of the USA. He was spying on congress. Used the IRS to target republicans he and Hillary need to be in prison for allowing our soldiers to die

I agree so much with this suggestion. We need to get our country back. The way to make this happen is; "Don't Vote For Incumbents ". Most of them are beholding to big business. Not the people who elected than. If the shoe fits, wear it! You be the judge. I know what I plan to do. How about you?

Our country is now suffering from what under regulated capitalism and the corporate personhood of multi national corporations does to a democratic nation and the world. We are in the economic and social situation we are in because this is where capitalism drove us... That's what capitalism does to democratic republics it makes a few capitalists very wealthy who then buy up our representation to become WEALTHIER UNTIL THEY OWN OR HAVE DESTROYED EVERYTHING. Capitalism eats up everything for profit. There is no loyalty to nation or fellow country man in capitalism or the capitalist creation of " crony capitalism ". Capitalism is a economic engine that places capital in the hands of a few Capitalist who then in turn decide how best to use that capital to create more capital for the few who have the extra resources to invest. The end game of capitalism is the same end game of the board game Monopoly and as I recall only one player wins the game in its end , no ? Another creation of capital is called Corporate Personhood it gives the corporation super human rights, remember Mitt Romney comment " Corporations are people too my friend. " Well with no soul or moral objective maybe the corporate person is not such a good friend or neighbor . Save our nation vote for and help elect Bernie Sanders for President in 2016 and shock the establishment entitled elites. We voters , We the People have become complacent and comfortable for to long and let the Corporate " Person " who owns the media tell us what they want us to hear and see . We don't realize that most thing we use and enjoy were created by a democratic socialistic country or maybe public education, public libraries, public post office, public parks ( local , state and national ), public transportation, public 4th of July celebrations ,police, fire, military, Courts, jails, roads, bridges, highways, airports, harbors , water towers, water treatment plants et.et.et. We have allowed them to buy our government , local state and federal . It's Our Job WE THE PEOPLE to fix this before its to late. Vote for and help elect Bernie Sanders for President in 2016 and shock the entitled establishment elites. Let them hear the shot across the bow!

Our government doesn't work. Our country is broken by corrupt politicians. Give Trump a try‼️ Bill Clinton lied as president to the entire world... Obama lies about everything... Hillary lies also about everything. I'm giving Donald Trump a businessman a chance...he knows how this lying, corrupt government works. With $21 trillion dollars in debt we need someone like him‼️

You are correct, our nation is a republic, not a democracy, but how do we determine who those representatives are in our republic? Over the past 200+ years of our republic, we have changed a few of our rules and regulations, such as allowing the people to vote for who their senators are, not having them appointed anymore, a democratic process to send our senators to work in our republic. You will also find in your historical readings, that each state creates their own constitutions to determine how they will operate the affairs of their own particular state, which may vary from our federal constitution (which gave the states the powers to do just that, though not completely).

we need people on the left to run for republican seats. the republicans in congress need to be replaced,or it won't matter who wins the nomination for president. in my opinion,we need 400 more people like elisabeth warren, bernie sanders , and al franken in our congress...... this means we need to replace about half the dems, and every last republican and tea partier. if you don't have someone like this in your district...... run yourself,if you don't know someone else...... we dont need right winger seats to go unchallenged this time around.

I did not say the word democracy or its derivatives were in the Constitution. One principle of democracy is in the Constitution and that is the right to vote. Comprehension of words and their application are required for understanding.

Stephen *** If you can tell me where I can find the word "Democracy" in Our Constitution, I might check your info out. Until then, NOT.

Mickey Snyder

First thing you should do is : Read the Constitution of the United States. Therein You will find in Article # 4 , Section # 4 , The States are Guaranteed a " Constitutional Republican " form of Government. NOT a "Democracy" that you advocate here in your Article. You have the Issue correct. You just need to Get your History Corrected. Just Sayin.

Scot Beattie

Joanne are you joking? The wonderful republican "party of no" has blocked every single solitary thing he's tried to accomplish. They haven't left him any choice but to try to get things done the hard way. He's not broken a single law or done one thing that's against the constitution. I'd call the lunatic fringe tea sack traitors the ones who are trying to create their own dictatorship.

Dong away with the electoral college would solve nothing.... Doing away with the monopoly that the republicans and democrats have on the election process however would solve every one of these problems.
