Group Sues FEC to Open Presidential Debates to Independent Candidates
Level the Playing Field (LPF), the group that is trying to improve the health of American democracy by opening up the fall 2016 presidential debates, filed a lawsuit on Monday in federal district court against the Federal Election Commission. LPF was joined in the historic lawsuit by the Green Party and the Libertarian Party.
The plaintiffs are represented by Alexandra Shapiro, who was Ruth Bader Ginsburg's law clerk and is now with the Shapiro Arato firm. Ms. Shapiro has won several high-profi

2016 Will Make the Strongest Case for Publicly Funded Elections
The 2012 presidential election was certainly the most expensive in American history. President Obama's re-election effort cost $1.1 billion, including nearly $700 million spent directly by his campaign. Mitt Romney's campaign spent over $400 million, but he received almost $800 million in additional outside help.
The cost of the 2016 presidential election, however, is expected to surpass these figures. One estimate reaches as high as $5 billion, and Hillary Clinton's campaign might spend as muc

Rumors, Sex, Journalism, and the Loss of a Gay Republican
Republicans had a big year in 2014. They firmed up their hold on the House of Representatives and made a run at taking control of the U.S. Senate.
It was just the kind of year that, historically, has produced Republican wins in the 52nd Congressional District. But Democrats held the 52nd, one of the few bright spots in an otherwise dismal showing, particularly in swing districts like that one.
Only a few weeks before Election Day, CNN — America’s most trusted purveyor of unverified information

Will The First Prison Sentence over Super PAC Shenanigans Matter?
On Friday, June 12, Tyler Harber was sentenced to serve two years in prison, making him the first person to be convicted and jailed for unlawfully coordinating activities between a super PAC and a federal campaign.
The sentencing serves as a caveat to congressional and presidential campaigns and their allied groups about the need to ensure compliance with federal campaign election laws in the run-up to the 2016 election.
In 2012, Harber assisted Republican candidate Chris Perkins in his contes

Fight of the Century: Media Sets Stage for Bush v. Clinton II
The headliners for the 2016 presidential campaign are
likely to be Bush v. Clinton again. Jeb Bush and Hillary Clinton have been rumored to be the nominees for months, nay years, prior to their official announcements.
With obvious parallels to the 1992 election, these two political dynasties have come a long way since the early 90s.
For those who remember 1992's presidential match-up between Bill and Bush Sr., the most apparent sign is that it is not 1992 anymore. Unfortunately, as their camp

800 Years after the Magna Carta, We The People Must Rise Again
June 15, 2015 marks exactly 800 years since the sealing of the Magna Carta by King John, in an English meadow called Runnymede.
The Magna Carta is widely regarded as the document that marked the beginning of the Anglo tradition of constitutional liberty, which would eventually lead to the writing of the U.S. Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution.
The writers of the U.S. Constitution wished to preserve the natural rights they already held, including those truly fundamental right

Why Hillary and the GOP Shouldn't Talk About Voting Rights
During a speech at Texas Southern University on Thursday, Hillary Clinton voiced her support for a number of reforms and policy changes to make voting easier and to expand voting rights, 3 of which stand out in particular: expanding early voting periods, automatic voter registration for 18-year-olds, and re-establishing a formula for preclearance under the Voting Rights Act.In response to these proposals and broad criticism of what Clinton calls the Republican Party's "sweeping effort to disempo

The Public Policy Institute of California released survey results Wednesday that show eight of 10 Californians say turnout is either a big problem (59 percent) or somewhat of a problem (25 percent). O

Want Real Change in American Politics? Be A Rabble-Rouser
Right now in America, a broad movement exists calling for change. It cannot be defined by any single label. Independent, Common Sense, Moderate, Centrist... they have all been used to characterize aspects of something much larger.
It is a movement driven by a deep disillusionment with politics. Its members are the crazy voters, the ones who view the low standards of leadership, the lack of government responsiveness, and the failure of Congress to do anything meaningful, and say, "Enough is enou
