Competition in the Age of Frenemies
Competition in the Age of Frenemies
Credit: lib.utexas.edu Ideology is being replaced by realpolitik in the world political arena, with competition and cooperation between frenemies perhaps becoming the norm. The war on terror began on September 11, 2001 in New York City and Washington DC, where teams of terrorists professing a militant brand of Sunni Islamism killed thousands of Americans using commercial airliners, brought down the World Trade Center, damaged the Pentagon and caused roughly $100 billion in direct and indirect e

Biometric Voter Registration: Voting Goes Scientific
Biometric Voter Registration: Voting Goes Scientific
With a lot of discussion as of late on issues surrounding voter registration laws and voter suppression in the U.S., the discussion of alternatives to improving the voting process becomes a relevant topic. On the more intensive side of the spectrum, the idea of Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) can be considered. Although most likely not a viable option for the U.S., it is nevertheless an interesting subject that has growing prevalence in Africa. Biometric Voter Registration is the process of

Gary Johnson and Virgil Goode Potentially Play Spoiler
Gary Johnson and Virgil Goode Potentially Play Spoiler
Credit: Ron Hill Imagery By most accounts the 2012 presidential election is going to be close. With Republican Mitt Romney and Democrat Barack Obama lambasting each other over petty disclosures might it be outside actors that end up deciding the election? Third parties have had a notoriously difficult time in the United States. If one retreats all the way back to the Constitutional Convention of 1787 and the ensuing battle between the mislabeled Federalists and Anti-Federalists, the two-party

Confidence in TV News at New Low
Confidence in TV News at New Low
Americans' confidence in television news has fallen to a new low. According to a newly-published Gallup survey, just 21% of adults state that they have a “great deal” or “quite a lot” of confidence in television news. That is down from 46% when the polling organization first began asking respondents their views on TV news back in 1993. It is worth noting that this survey was conducted between June 7 and June 10, and thus captured a snapshot of the nation's attitude toward this particular indust

Gary Johnson Supporters Protest Media Blackout Across Nation
Gary Johnson Supporters Protest Media Blackout Across Nation
Photo: Gage Skidmore There is no shortage of love lost between CNN and the libertarian presidential candidate, former two term New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson, nor is it a secret. The cable news network continues to remain a thorn in his side (for about a year now), carefully and quietly excluding Johnson from its polling. One small ray of hope emerged on August 29, 2011 when CNN finally included him in their bi-weekly national poll. Apparently Gov. Johnson polled a bit too high at 2%, and his nam

YouTube News Challenges Traditional Outlets
YouTube News Challenges Traditional Outlets
According to one of Gallup’s most recent polls, only 21% of Americans are confident in the televised news they watch, and only 25% feel confident reading newspapers. Both of these statistics mark an all-time low of trust in the news. With such little trust in the traditional news forums, could news junkies turn to YouTube news for their information? Since YouTube’s inception in 2005, today, the social media site’s reach is vast and continues to increase. Studies prove that “YouTube is now the t

Key to Swing State Voters: Stagnant vs Growing Economy
Credit: Purple Strategies Purple Poll July 2012 In a new Purple Poll released today, voters in 12 swing states diverge dramatically on their views of the country's economic trajectory. This overwhelmingly affects who they plan on casting their ballot for in November. "Among those who believe the economy is getting better, 93% support Obama, 4% favor Romney. And among those who say it is getting worse, Romney leads Obama 84% to 7%," says the Purple Strategies findings. This economic question i
