Proposition C in Los Angeles Fights Corporate Personhood
Richard Cavalleri / Shutterstock.com
Since 2010, a growing number of local propositions and resolutions have passed in a largely symbolic effort to override portions of the Supreme Court's decision in Citizens United v FEC and Buckley v Valeo.
Given the federally binding nature of a Supreme Court decision, the only remedy to 'reverse' the decision would be an amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which is no small task. Nevertheless, municipalities across the country have drafted resolutions cal

Taser Death in Vermont Raises Questions of Reasonable Use
Vermont Attorney General William Sorrell // Photo: Valley News - Theophil Syslo
When the Attorney General of Vermont decided not to prosecute a Vermont State trooper who used a taser to kill an unarmed, 39-year-old epileptic artist, few Vermonters were surprised, most of the Vermont media managed to get the story partly wrong, and none of the media took note of clear falsification in the AG’s press release describing his decision.
Attorney General William Sorrell, 65, issued a carefully writte

Georgia Rep Paul Broun Introduces \Audit the Fed\ Legislation
With the retirement of Ron Paul in 2013, the former Texas congressman leaves behind an ideological legacy that several are lining up to continue. One point Paul advocated for was a motion to "audit the fed," legislation he introduced in the 112th Congress as HR 459.
In one of his first acts in the new Congress, Georgia US Rep Paul Broun, a congressman in his fourth term, introduced legislation to audit the Federal Reserve, HR 24. The text in Broun's legislation is identical to Paul's HR 459, wh

The Veterans Affairs Department Gets Occupied But Still Ignores
Photo: U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs
On October 4, a small group of American veterans went to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) in Washington, D.C., to talk to officials there about veteran suicides, veteran homelessness, veteran joblessness, and other veteran struggles. No one from the department would talk to them then.
Even the contingent of Homeland Security guards blocking the door on October 4 wouldn’t explain to the veterans why they couldn’t come in. So, they stayed on

This Year, Record Numbers of Independents Elected
Credit: MTV.com
During this election, IVN made an effort to give fair coverage to third party candidates running for president, such as Gary Johnson, Jill Stein, Rocky Anderson and Virgil Goode, as well as independent candidates for national or state offices. Despite the limited success of the presidential candidates, 25 independents or minor party candidates were elected to state offices. The 2012 election marked record numbers of independents and third parties in government since 1942.

Senator Angus King Joins the Democratic Caucus
With little surprise, the newly elected independent Senator from Maine, Angus King, declared that he will join the Democratic Caucus at a press conference on Wednesday.
The announcement followed Senator King's consultation with Majority Leader Harry Reid, and will tally 55 Democratic members in the Senate. Since the Democrats retained the majority in the Senate this election, King's decision did not come as a surprise. Sen. King noted, “affiliating with the majority makes the most sense”.

The Things That Seem & Those That Are
For the great majority of mankind are satisfied with appearances, as though they were reality, and are often more influenced by the things that seem than by those that are.- Nicolo Machiavelli, The 8th Institute
I began writing opinion pieces in 1973. It’s now 39-years later and in something approaching 500,000 words, I have expressed many opinions about issues and people. I have neither hidden my political beliefs nor Christian faith, neither my cultural values nor love of baseball.

How Did Third Party Candidates Perform in the Election?
During this election cycle, IVN covered third party candidates to ensure voters could access information about the wide range of choices they had at the ballot box.
Gary Johnson, from the Libertarian Party, received 1,139,562 votes which represents 0.9% of the popular vote. He is the third party candidate who has done the best this year, but fell far short of the 5% needed to receive public funding for the 2016 Libertarian candidate. He is, however, the most successful Libertarian Party candida

As of 10 AM EST on November 7th 2012, independent Senate candidates have earned 897,259 votes, a number will only rise as precincts continue to report. As independent votes creep towards the one million mark in the Senate race, history has already been made for non-partisan voters. Though no independent Governors or Congressmen were elected last night, two independent candidates won seats in the US Senate.
In Vermont, Sanders won by a 46% margin over his
