# We're Untying the Two-Party Doom Loop

With less than **20 days left** until Election Day, millions of voters feel trapped in a two-party doom loop.   
  
Yet, NANR members continue to make inroads against the perils of partisanship and policy paralysis.

**MAJOR REFORM ENDORSEMENT**

[FairVote](https://www.fairvote.org/?ref=ivn.us) hosted [a webinar on October 13 with Andrew Yang](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxwXVoDi8po&ref=ivn.us) to discuss the former Democratic presidential candidate’s support for ranked choice voting. During the Zoom call he also discussed support for open primaries, campaign finance reform, and more. **VOTER CHOICE MASSACHUSETTS**

Additionally, Andrew Yang has declared his support for ranked choice voting initiatives, including the [“Yes on 2”](https://www.yeson2rcv.com/?ref=ivn.us) campaign to bring the alternative voting method to Massachusetts elections. The campaign has added big names to its list of endorsements, including US Sen. Elizabeth Warren, and most recently, [The Boston Globe](https://www.bostonglobe.com/2020/10/11/opinion/vote-yes-question-2/?ref=ivn.us). **INDEPENDENT VOTING**

[IndependentVoting.org](https://independentvoting.org/?ref=ivn.us) released the findings of its second survey of independent voters nationwide, called "[Confronting A New Reality: Independents Speak Out](https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001JJUaY-rYNNrqsxyhhy5IwXx7IIis78Xh2qmQkZG-Rp3GwIniQGAXGA8H14nbQSReX4N97%5FjmAEB%5F85pscIDkBWi%5F6mw2APRPvHTEMZu9l0PyuF5g0%5F4QEsMiuNH5PYdiGG6oOTHm8YIQ0GSXyIHg9Dyn1-3RmaF2mxqbavmvzpU=&c=LKll%5FyQ2MwIlWiU525%5F%5FL9roiiyXMnvu3A4ylMWavABqFiXBKoIbMw==&ch=WN87TBDTwn-l9aog15JAGOrLm10FNA3cb12BR9enWgg0Lf4J7pBE7A==&ref=ivn.us).” Most notable in the results was that 81% of independents surveyed believed the COVID crisis only made the problem of partisanship more critical to address. **ALASKANS FOR BETTER ELECTIONS**

The [Alaskans for Better Elections campaign](https://alaskansforbetterelections.com/?ref=ivn.us), to end dark money and bring top-four nonpartisan primaries with ranked choice voting in the general election to the state, released the findings of a poll that found that 59% of voters supported the proposed amendment. The results show that the amendment has clear support with all socioeconomic and political demographics. **OPEN DEBATES**

The [Free and Fair Elections Foundation](https://freeandequal.org/?ref=ivn.us) and [Open The Debates](https://openthedebates.org/?ref=ivn.us) co-hosted an open presidential debate, slated as a rebuke to the presidential debates between the major party candidates, which have long lacked inclusion and substance. Five minor party and independent candidates discussed a broad range of important political topics in a civil and comprehensive way. **FLORIDA AMENDMENT 3**

The [“All Voters Vote” campaign](https://allvotersvote.org/?ref=ivn.us) to reform how Floridians vote received a strong endorsement from NBA Hall of Famer Earvin “Magic” Johnson this week. Amendment 3 on the Florida ballot would adopt nonpartisan top-two primaries for state executive and legislative elections. The ballot measure was also endorsed by the [Miami Herald](https://www.miamiherald.com/opinion/editorials/article246374465.html?ref=ivn.us).

**PROPOSITION D FOR DEMOCRACY**

A ballot measure to adopt nonpartisan open primaries with approval voting in the general election in St. Louis received two significant endorsements recently. Cori Bush, rising progressive star in the Democratic Party and candidate for Missouri's 1st Congressional district [endorsed the campaign](https://www.facebook.com/PropDforDemocracy/posts/1092373267826762), as did the [St. Louis American](https://www.stlamerican.com/news/editorials/vote-yes-on-prop-r-for-early-childhood-education-and-prop-d/article%5Fff7e57e8-04eb-11eb-94e8-93af3d286906.htm?ref=ivn.us), the largest paper serving the city’s majority African-American community.

**CENTER FOR ELECTION SCIENCERE**

The Center for Election Science is hosting two upcoming events. On Tuesday, October 20, they'll be [hosting a discussion about election security in 2020](https://electionscience.org/safeguarding-the-vote-election/?ref=ivn.us) with Verified Voting. Then, join them on Wednesday, October 21, for a [text banking training party for the Prop D for Democracy initiative](https://electionscience.org/prop-d-text-banking-party/?ref=ivn.us)! Prop D would bring nonpartisan, approval voting primaries with a top-two runoff to St. Louis, and virtual volunteers are needed to make sure every voter knows about it.

**UNITE AMERICA**

Unite America launched [a video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRnK1lT-JkM&ref=ivn.us) on the two-party “Doom Loop” that makes the case for long-term reforms and shares the thesis Lee Drutman has been working to socialize. Unite America Executive Director Nick Troiano also wrote [an op-ed](https://thefulcrum.us/big-picture/doom-loop?ref=ivn.us) in The Fulcrum on the “Doom Loop'' and how it relates to the coming fight over the Supreme Court.
