by Jane Susskind, published

Adapting to the growing world of Facebook and Twitter, law enforcement officers are increasingly turning to social media to aid in investigative efforts. With over 1 billion users on Facebook and half a billion on Twitter, police officers are capitalizing on the wealth of information provided by citizens in a method called "Social Policing."

According to this infographic provided by LexisNexis:

  • 4 out of 5 officers use social media for investigative purposes
  • 80% of law enforcement professionals are self-taught when it comes to using social media for investigations
  • Two-thirds of users believe social media helps solve crimes more quickly
  • 83% of current users expect to use social media more over the next year
