By tacking the student loan interest rate hike freeze onto a stalled transportation appropriations bill with a similar deadline in the 11th hour, Congress was able to sidestep widespread criticism over its short-term, deficit-fueled “fix” to the Highway Trust Fund problem.
The federal government was expected to pick up much of the tab but recent votes in Congress have killed potential funding. You’d think that would be enough to kill the zombie, but no. A new project plan was released on Monday.
President Obama, the Senate, and the House are currently debating competing transportation bills. Regardless of which bill finally passes, California will receive billions in aid for badly needed infrastructure repairs.
