Washington State To Launch Voter Registration App on Facebook

The Associated Press reports that Washington State plans to launch an app next week which will allow Facbeook users to register to vote on the social media network. The application will be on the secretary of state’s Facebook page and also give users the option of “liking” the application and recommending it to their friends.
“In this age of social media and more people going online for services, this is a natural way to introduce people to online registration and leverage the power of friends on Facebook to get more people registered,” said Shane Hamlin, co-director of elections.
Facebook spokesman Andrew Noyes also made a statement:
“We are excited that citizens in Washington state will be able to register to vote and review useful voting information on Facebook.”
The Facebook app will ask users to agree to let Facebook access their information, and while name and date of birth will be automatically filled out, the user will have to enter their state ID card or driver’s license to continue.
Adding the aspect of social sharing to voter registration could really boost registration numbers, but would you feel comfortable giving Facebook your ID number?

I think our right to vote deserves more than registration being placed on a social media page. next it will be in the bar room or maybe MY SPACE. I’m an election official and I simply think it is in someway disrespectful.

its a good idea, might be shaky in practice. there is an entire generation coming up that has been using social media sites since they first could use a computer. this only makes sense.

Anytime you can get people to register and participate in an election that’s a good thing but here right now we can’t even learn if our president is an American citizen so my concern would be determining there eligibility

Bad, considering the whole thing could be hacked and someone could register 500 fake people. Making this system so easy will in return, make for a higher risk of lazy and uneducated voters who are to lazy to do any sort of research or any background on people. Instead it will fall within party lines for who looks the best, dresses the best, nicest teeth ect ect
