The Disappearing Republican Party
By Chad Peace on 12/20/2012 in independent voters, Politico, republican party with 71 CommentsRead Time: 3 - 4 minutes
In an age of algorithms and automation, nothing is more insightful than numbers, and the conclusions derived from them. Yet, in an era when every movement in our economy is calculated and analyzed, the brightest economists still can’t pull us out of a rut. As we chart the skies and weather patterns, sudden catastrophe still surprises us.
More voters now self-identify as independent than with any party. Yet, even with the lack of enthusiasm from the general electorate over the Democratic-dominated outcome of the election, the political commentators still analyze the landscape in binary code.
Lois Romano of Politico wrote today about “The Disappearing Independent” voter. She argues that the independent no longer decides elections because “Romney became the first presidential candidate in recent history to decisively win the independent voter,” and still lose.
Even in the two-sided statistical world that Romano embraces, her conclusion is suspect. If Romney, as a representative of the GOP, received an overwhelming number of independent voters, and still lost, does this mean that independent voters are disappearing? Doesn’t it more logically mean that the Republican brand is disappearing?
In reality, the independent voter is not a party affiliation. It is a mindset. Independent voters can be found in the Democratic Party, Republican Party, Greens, Libertarians, and so on. Independent voters are the one’s who believe that party affiliation alone doesn’t make you right; doesn’t make you wrong. They are the ones that ask for an explanation. They are tired of empty talking points. They believe in the shades of gray between the aisles of red and blue solutions. They want authenticity, sincerity, and humility.
Republican and Democratic consultants and commentators, despite their massive data and advances in technology, can’t figure out the independent voter. This is because they aren’t a variable on their data print out. On their score sheets, some of the most ardent ideologues, proud of their perfect belief system, are independent voters simply because they have an “independent” registration.
The truth is, if anything is “disappearing,” it’s the Republican brand. They have become a party of panderers. They are a mechanical party that says what the reactionaries within want to hear; what the polls say will work; what their leadership says is ok. No authenticity. No sincerity. No humility. Even when they get a majority of the registered independent voters, they still can’t win.
Within the two-party institutional infrastructure, the only place for voters who used to find comfort in the GOP’s big tent, is to “the other guy.” Just when the Democrats think that means they “won” the game that both parties are playing with our system of government, our economy, and our lives, there should be concern for those itching for a more ideological left.
Young voters voted overwhelmingly for Obama. Yet, there was nowhere near the enthusiasm for “hope and change” that there was four years prior. Young voters have grown up in a more integrated world, where the constructs of a rigid philosophy, whether religious or political, are not conducive to getting along with the spectrum of society. As a result, the fear of the Republican brand, which has associated itself with exclusivity, rigidity, and the fear of others, drove them to the polls.
As the left becomes more dogmatic in their ideological pursuits, they will distance independents as well. If the Republican brand stops listening to consultants and pollsters and starts showing a glimmer of humanity, the brand might just reappear again.

I do think we’ll see the GOP transform in the coming years. Perhaps it’ll be a move towards a bit more Libertarianism (Rand Paul, Gary Johnson), maybe it’ll be changing a few issue stances (women’s right to choose, immigration). I think a few but rather large slip-ups by Republican names did damage to the party brand, too. Like Rove’s inefficient campaigning or Akin’s comments being blown up nationally.
It’s not that the independent voter is dying out, it could be that conservatives don’t want to be labelled as Republicans anymore.
The overwhelming number of independents voting for Romney are probably just fed up with Obama. They might not be aware of alternative candidates, in which the media will shut out. That’s a whole different story, though.

Independents should address issues more moderately to attract more liberal voters, and stay away from liberal, conservative, or libertarian extremes.

i think a lot of people are looking too simply at the label, independent. As the republican brand has become more and more toxic, traditional conservatives, who are going to vote for the conservative candidate regardless, are simply distancing themselves from the party through their official affiliation. Its not that independents are any less significant than in the past, merely more disenchanted conservatives can no longer bear to have an R next to their name

Republican pandering?????? Republican’s are not offering dependance, food stamps, free cell phone, increasing inflation, increasing debt, free birth control, expanded unions, handouts to special interest, and paybacks to your green energy buddies for votes like Democrats. I thought this page was about independent perspective? How could someone with an outside view not see the obvious?

In 4 to 6 years the Republican Party will be completely transformed. Many of the old, hard, right-wing socialists and social conservatives will be replaced by a much more pragmatic and progressive thinking younger group of men and WOMEN. In fact, it may be hard to distinguish them from some of today’s Democrats. These future new comers to the Republican Party are very savvy students of public view points.

The day the GOP drops its asinine policies on gays, immigration, and contraception, they will see a swell of activities. Turns out many gay people, immigrants and women understand mathematics and are absolutely disgusted by the Democrats’ fiscal malfeasance. But they won’t vote GOP in the meantime because it regards them as second-class, or third-class citizens.
Luke Enoch

The reason republicans are the focus of criticism more than democrats is very simple, republicans denounce science and reality. As the US population becomes better educated, the smaller the republican party gets. Unfortunately for republicans, many social issues revolve around reality and science, and a lot of voters care about social issues.

Why don’t you just come out and say it? You are a bigot, raging against religious people, unable to tolerate the views of other people, while screaming at the top of your lungs to be tolerated for being.. gay/having blind faith in scientists and politicians/a minotiry/easily manipulated/jealous and greedy, desiring more than you deserve/etc, whatever the case may be for you individually.. There is a reason you have taken a hard line totalitarian stance against people who you view as “less intelligent”, and for some reason, think that tyrrany by majority is acceptable and that the rest of the people that do not agree with you will simply tolerate being oppressed. Boy are you in for a surprise.

I do not speak for the network, although this is a quote from my article. I do not think the Democrats are much better; but the Republicans are less open to the idea of intellectual competition among their own ranks than the Democrats. I personally believe the Republicans have an awesome opportunity in the next few years … if they just would allow for a bit of dissent from the party-line.

If all this group is going to be is a hyped up dem and republican bash-session, I will be leaving it. I was interested in the independent political movement because common sense has been left behind on both sides of the aisle……. can you imagine a political candidate, GOP or democrat, that is serious about balancing the budget, and also serious about getting the government out of our bedrooms, dinner tables, and other aspects of our personal lives?
I’m sick of the conservative and liberal talking points. I am a die hard conservative, a fan of Rush Limbaugh, and a 20-something professional with a master’s degree, and I just don’t see where arguing with liberals is effective….
To all you liberals out there: conservatives (for the most part) are guided by faith convictions, (many of which science has offered strong supporting arguments), and that will not change. How about some tolerance? Isn’t that one of your faith convictions?
To you conservatives out there: stop the same old talking points. We all know where the financial picture of this country is headed, and we are incredibly powerless (at this point in time) to do anything about it. The liberals keep talking about bush’s 4T deficit explosion over 8 years, yet forget to count Obama’s 7T in new debt in 4 years…… it WILL catch up with them……
Can we be independent? If the comment thread on this group is any indication, we can’t. We’re too busy arguing with people who will never give in……

You won’t find independence here sadly. This site was good before it got larger. Now it is filled with people like Luke Enoch, Alex Gauthier, and William Boardman. Extremist left socialist totalitarians who tout this present situation in America (the beginning of a downfall), as an awakening. They truly believe the leftist public education system, the feminist destruction of the family unit, and severe limitations imposed on freedoms and rights guarenteed to the people, has helped make this country greater. What a laugh…
The only thing a shift to the left, and loss of freedoms in this country signifies is that brainwashing in public schools and the university system works! The left have pushed “education” on our country for decades, as well as absolving families of a man, woman and children, destroying the upbringing of the children of our nation, leaving more of them homeless, sick in the head, desperate and uneducated than ever before. This just goes to show you that with people dumb enough, you can manipulate them into thinking their enemies are their friends. If you are looking for indepedents, this is no logner where to find them, for it has been invaded for those same “progressives” who do nothing but bash the right, and people who disagree with them. It is no longer about the issues on IVN, and I have seen this bear it’s ugly head in most of the articles and comments the past few months. It is back to being about the parties and why we “should” be like Europe.

Frank Visage Farm Subsidies make your food cheaper. Green Energy, Water Taxes, Water Manipulation, Eminent Domain, Fuel Regulations, EPA, Taxes, and Permiting all make your food more expensive. Juan Tellez. Conservatives and Libertarians are the only ones standing watch for our freedoms. Neither of those exist in the Democratic Party, and those that claim to be never stand for their values and follow the Progressive Train to Insolvency. Chad Peace, You are a Democrat if you can not even independently analyze the most obvious facts. Democratic Party, voting on Party lines over and over. Fine, but how often do they vote against their own party to stop legislation and protect the peoples interest. 0% Now take the Republican Party. The Tea Party class has stopped the Establishment from continuing their Progressive expansion of Government. PROGRRESSIVE. Progressive is an idea that the chosen few knows better and should rule over the many. Socialism. Do you understand how that works? Do you know who they are? Who is fighting for our Liberties? Who is fighting for our Solvency? The same ones that got us here so fast? Or the ones that want to reestablish the power to the individuals? Every Great Civilization has crumbled when the power of all ended up in the hands of the few. Yet you and others trust those hands? What makes you and them so smart that you can solve all of the ills of man using a means that has failed every time since the beginning of time? How can dismiss all fundamentals of economics and physics? This small group of people is that smart? So smart that they can overcome every fundamental we were taught? Nope. Power. Power is what has destroyed every great nation. The thought that that an elite class possessed all knowledge, when in reality, those around them had all of the knowledge. Our founders understood that, and gave us the greatest safety of freedom that we could ever have. Division of Power. Without that the little people are at the mercy of the power holders. See if there is division like their is in the Republican Party it is because there are competing ideas. In the Democratic Party there is ZERO division therefore no competing ideas which clearly shows your hypocrisy and slander as a Liberal. The Republican Progressives are just as much in search of power and control as you and every other person is that CLAIMS INDEPENDENCE!
