Former FL GOP Chair Denounces Party, Alleges Voter Suppression

In a 630-page deposition release by prosecutors on Wednesday, former Florida Republican Party chairman Jim Greer alleges GOP leaders were meeting to discuss tactics to suppress black votes in his state. Greer is currently in the middle of a civil case against the party concerning a dispute over his severance agreement.
He is also “facing felony corruption charges and has an interest in scorning his party,” according to Salon.
His allegations come on the heels of headline-grabbing efforts to combat voter fraud in Florida by current Gov. Rick Scott. The purging of voter rolls has been criticized by civil rights groups and is under scrutiny from the Justice Department.
The deposition contends such efforts by the Florida GOP are a conscience, planned attempt to allow fewer residents to vote.
“They talked about not letting blacks vote … and minority outreach programs were not fit for the Republican Party,” Greer said.
He said “whack-a-dos” from the far right wanted him out as chairman due to his moderate stance.
“The wing of the party that does not agree with Charlie Crist considered me a moderate chairman,” Greer said, according to the Associated Press. “As [Florida House Speaker] Dean Cannon said to me one time, the people that want to destroy our Party are trying to take it over.”
Former Florida Governor Charlie Crist is now an independent and wrote an editorial for the Washington Post last week:
“Cynical efforts at voter suppression are driven by an un-American desire to exclude as many people and silence as many voices as possible.
Our country has never solved anything with less democracy, and we’re far better off when more citizens can access the polls — no matter which party mobilizes the most voters to them. As governor of Florida, I extended voting hours and increased the number of days people could vote. I also restored registration rights for felons, years after starting that effort in the state Senate with a member of the opposite party.
I was a Republican at the time of those decisions, which didn’t make me many friends on my side. But when you do the right thing for the people, a political party’s concerns roll off your back quite easily.”
The Republican Party of Florida has declined to comment on Greer’s claims, citing the ongoing legal case.
As for former Gov. Crist, an ex-Republican himself, his op-ed puts him squarely at odds with his former party over the current efforts in Florida.
“There are lines that should not be crossed; meddling with voting rights is one of them. It is un-American and it is beneath us.”

There is a story about a 96 year old woman in Tenn who was denied a photo ID. She was trying to get the ID to vote. These laws ARE voter suppression!!

Yes, Ernie, I’m sure his career is over now, and he’ll be destitute. Probably won’t even be able to warm up his can beans unless he lucks into some matches.

If, what he claims is true, then they broke 3 federal laws : rigging and election, denying a citizen the right to vote, and violating people’s civil rights. Who ever was involved, should face criminal charges on all counts !

Actually it is VERY american. originally only male landowners were allowed to vote. The senate was originally not elected. Blacks couldn’t vote for one reason or another through time, always repressively. Hell women only got the vote for about a half century.

I am not so sure choosing which member of Skull and bones should shoe in un-elected administration officials every 4 years, in a system that allows the population to vote on general policies that AFFECT them. We don’t have that, and we never really did.

We may not like that, and GOOD. you shouldn’t like it. It is the duty of all Americans, or populations in general to control their governance, not the other way around; and if we feel we have no voice. Well, who’s fault is that? We need to build a labor party, reinstate industry at home and re-build the workers unions. This is integral in my view, because most people in the world are working class.

Lee, I agree, but in order to do so, we need to stop the 1% from changing good business that made us the most productive and healthy economy into a corporate based economy. I know, I’m in business. The 1% figure If they can change all aspects of government to allow them free reign, they’ll be untouchable. Too big to fail (banks). As it is, it’s big business vs small business, and small business is losing. And it doesn’t matter what political party you belong to, it’ll hurt you and your family eventually, unless you’re the 1%.

20 COMMENTS and NO One Really Owing-Up to the Real Charges of VOTER SUPPRESSION. Thus it leaves one to make a determination of A Variety of Reaons available to Deny the causal factors of the alleged charge; 1.) Faced with the Charges from “Insider Sources,” “Government Investigations,” and “Third-Party Agencies,” (NAACP, ACLU, “Right-To-Vote Agencies,” Citizen Voter Claims, etc. ,) 2.) The basis of your politics (Ultra-Conservative & Ultra-Partisanship) prompts your naivete, and causes you to Overlook the obvious, 3.) You realize the viability of the Suppression Claims, but place Party-Politics above reason, 4.) You fail to have the intellectual capacity to challenge “Party Influence,” OR 5.) You have some personal reason to deny the possibility of an obviously valid claim. …….

I am concerned that voter registration drives for the voter suppression states are not looking at all their options. Some of these states allow gun, fishing and other licenses. There must be liberal activist who are in a place to legally give out theses licenses and could help. Please look at all of your options not just the cumbersome option of a state ID.
