Two Ways to Protest Two-Party System

The Atlantic has a thought-provoking piece out today, “How to Protest the Major Parties Without Throwing Away Your Vote“, where the author proposes two main options for making a mark outside the two-party system:
1) Postpone your calculated support for someone you don’t like until you’re standing in the election booth. Before then, support the third-party nominee you’d like to see win. If a pollster asks who you support give their name, not the major-party candidate you may wind up voting for in the end. Doing so doesn’t squander your vote on someone who won’t win, but could be the difference between a Libertarian or Green Party candidate being included or excluded from TV debates.
2) Think about whether or not you live in a swing state. If so, maybe it makes more sense to vote Republican or Democrat. But if you live in a state like California, where the Democrat will obviously win, or a state like Utah where the Republican is obviously going to win, your vote is going to have a lot more impact if you’re part of a third-party surge that signals disaffection to others.
Adding, “If Republicans or Democrats notice a third party getting traction — that is to say, 8 or 10 or 15 percent of the vote — they’ll start co-opting its issues.”
What strategy do you have, if any, for voting?

Give a $1 to a Congressional candidate who will make open clean elections possible by being elected to Congress. Take the majority away from the bipartisan monopoly.

I think if a third party comes into the picture that will guarantee obama a second term and we definitely cannot afford another 4 more years of his socialist policies!!!

Reform campaign finance laws to exclude and limit donations from major IG and Lobbyists and corporations, reform the Electoral college to include a semi proportional representational system and allow for 3rd party options to have oppurtunities to lay out a legitimate campaign platform…generally applying transparency and accountability inside of the campain trail…repeal the 17th amendment allowing the senate to once again become the elite law making body it was designed to be…sheltering them from the biases of an uneducated constituency, helping to prevent partisanship from influencing congress and the federal level…Audit the Federal Reserve! ALL DAY

I only vote for candidates that support open primaries. Rocky Anderson responded to me that he vigorously supports open primaries and a national popular vote for president so it is fairly well settled for me.

The system is already totally co-opted. The rigged caucus’ have already proven that. Voting is nearly pointless at this point, unless enough people will write in Ron Paul (or someone like him), we’re boned for another 4 years. Voting aside, I think the less voting that occurs might be the best thing. The less involved we are with the powers that be, the more their power base is threatened. “Own the culture” in the words of my friend Dr. Joesph P. Farrell. It worked for Russia…

Gary Johnson has my vote. The other two are corruption to the core. I will never vote dem or rep ever again. Look at the mess both parties have made of this country.

I have never voted the Republocrat party on a Federal level in my life and I never will. I always vote with my conscience and if I do not see a good choice on the ballot, I write myself in. That’s my strategy.

I have believed for far too long that both mainstream parties are one in the same. I stopped voting for either political party years ago. Yea I hear all the time ” You wasted your vote!! ” I love replying yes you did….I wont be sorry for my choice in 2 or 4 years…can you say the same??? Most people dont know how to reply…others say they will vote for their party idiot again…and we wonder what the problem is in this country?!

Divide and conquer. Wedge issues guarantee the herd will split left and right, while the party’s candidates try to pick off the rest of us who don’t vote with our emotions. It’s a broken system that it goes against the original design, and it needs to be done away with. I think it’s funny that the GOP has to campaign against both Obama and Ron Paul, they are so scared of losing votes, they could have made it easier on themselves and nominated him, but he was not enough of a puppet and they could never have that, so they will continue to cut him and his supporters down and simply hope he goes away, but it is bigger than Ron Paul, it is people wanting real CHANGE….and neither party is willing to let us have the control we were intended to have.

I vote for who I think is best (in this case (G) Jill Stein). My hope is that people will eventually catch on to the two corrupt parties running the show. If we vote for their swindlers, we are playing their game, and hurting the country and planet in the long run. Giving in reminds Dems and Reps that we will relent to fear on election day, so that’s the worst thing we can do.

Any vote cast for either Democrats or Republicans is wasted. So is the vote not cast. What good does it do to say you’ll vote third party and then turn around and vote for the Democrat or Republican anyway? You’re giving the politicians no incentive to do as you want them to, and ensuring that the perpetual catch-22 of third party voting is maintained.
The ONLY viable way to send a message to the elites, to take back power using our electoral process, is to actually vote third party — and to hell with those damning you for “wasting” your vote on someone who represents you. They’re content to live forever in a system that doesn’t work for them but always against their interests.
