Nevada is every bit the rugged, individualistic, pioneering, enterprising state with an independent streak that it was in the days of the Wild West, with both positive and negative results. Easy divorce laws, legal prostitution, and legalized gambling have made gaming and tourism Nevada’s biggest industry today. With no personal or corporate income tax, Nevada is also one of the tax-friendliest states in the nation. While libertarian-leaning on many “vice” issues, Nevada is actually one of the toughest states on marijuana and drug policy, though its alcohol laws are among the most lax. .
Nevada ranks at the bottom for education and quality of life, and high for foreclosures and unemployment. It needs a renewed focus on education and libraries to turn things around because a well-educated public is the best jobs creator there is.
Nevada is one of the few states that will prove to be very important come November. Last presidential elections, Obama won the state over by 12 points. However, this time around may prove to be more difficult given the state’s challenging economic situation.
Despite the continuous growth in the role of the federal government, marijuana policy is one area where federalism is thriving.
