Vice Presidential Debate: “Battle for Voters in the Middle”

The night after Barack Obama performed below expectations in his first presidential debate last week, he attempted to rebound by heading to the University of Wisconsin-Madison. On Bascom Hill, he sought to rouse supporters, energize his base, and appeal to the swing state’s independent voters. Vice President Joe Biden, while performing much better than Obama in the one and only Vice
Presidential debate, similarly left the Bluegrass State to head to badger country to address an energized crowd on Friday at the University of Wisconsin-Lacrosse.
Biden stayed on the offensive and touched upon what he considered “fundamental differences” between the two campaigns including approaches to foreign policy, women’s rights, and economic recovery. He stressed that he and Obama would “lift the burden off the middle class, not double down on the great recession again.”
It was Biden’s fourth visit to Wisconsin this year and his eighth since taking office, while Romney and Ryan, who is from Janesville, have made a combined fifteen campaign stops to Wisconsin since April. All this attention to the land of the Packers speaks to the importance of Wisconsin’s place in this year’s presidential election.
And with so much at stake, what were the reactions to the debates and did Biden’s seemingly positive performance affect any voters?
According to Wisconsin news outlets, reactions to the debate seem to split down party lines, with independents remaining largely invisible. The UW-Madison newspaper, The Badger Herald, interviewed only the heads of the College Republicans and Democrats, each of who came out firmly claiming that their candidate had emerged victorious in the debate. The more liberal Cap Times published an editorial which compared Ryan’s “secret plan” of cutting taxes and balancing the budget with Richard Nixon’s “secret plan” to the end the Vietnam War in 1968. Meanwhile, the more conservative Milwaukee Journal Sentinel spotlighted Biden’s aggressiveness and explained Ryan’s stance as a “determined indictment” of the Obama policies.
Historically, the Vice-Presidential debate has had very little effect on the outcomes of elections since its introduction in 1976. John Hudak, a fellow at the Brooking Institute, affirmed that the debates were indeed “a battle for voters in the middle,” but ultimately, “a Vice Presidential debate does not determine an election outcome.” Instead, it appears that whoever wins in Wisconsin will be decided by the organization on the ground, the last month of campaigning, and perhaps the last two presidential debates, which tend to have a greater impact on voters’ perceptions. Obama won Wisconsin by twelve points in 2008, and according to Nate Silver, Obama only leads by three points in the state right now. Voters are energized by the candidates’ frequent visits but independents remain largely invisible and undecided. With Ryan poised to make an appearance in Waukesha this Monday, the Badger State is still up for grabs.

I believe Stein would have done well; but I am not in the least upset with how Obama/Biden have done. I left the GOP to become indie after they threw Huntsmann under the big bad GOP bus…I don’t think Romney/Ryan are ready for prime time yet; and think Stein is almost there; in 4 more years she probably gets my vote.

Neither said anything relevant. They refuse to talk about the real issues like the endless wars, the federal Reserve, the complex is code, and the NDAA indefinite detention laws

Too bad we don’t have a constitutional government anymore is it? That makes our government illegal.

What battle for voters in the middle? Both parties have abandoned us in favor of shoring up their bases.

Julia Smucker, given the *actual legislation proposed, voted on, and/or enacted* by the two parties respectively, how are you “in the middle”? Please be as specific as possible.

thinking in TV terms like “ready for primetime” is half the problem. The debate committee is ran by and for D/R is the other half. All those the ballot should be in these debates. Sponsors have left because of it. It is all rigged for the big 2 so it won’t matter who wins, they win.

Pryan, the CPD has excluded Johnson and Grey from all debates. As the R’s and D’s make the rules for the CPD. (Commission on Presidential Debates). Yet another way for them to control Americans by silencing all if the choices that voters have. It’s a sick, sick, sick system….

If Independents and Greens got busy in their Congressional Districts to send their own Representatives to Congress, they would have control equal to the President.

@ Owensboro, I have been saying this. We need to cocnentrate more on Congress rather than the Presidency. Only dictatorships focus on 1 position

Yes. I cannot buy a pig in a poke without seeing the pig. Ryan and Romney are saying trust us after saying I am one of 47% after retiring after working 40 years and paying into SS and Medicare.

Starting from the middle-out, not the top-down, or the bottom-up may be why abortion is an issue, divorce rates are high, and gays & lesbians marry each other and adopt-a-family.

There is nothing either one of those two corporate puppets has to say that interests me because it will no doubt turn out to be a lie if it is something that seems worthwhile anyway.

Trust me – if you guys would start concentrating on and getting people voted into Congress, then you would become relevant on the national stage. I implore you as Greens and Libertarians to do so – I have long considered myself a liberal Independent and have often voted Green in the past. I plan to vote for Obama so that Romney does not get into office because I do not want anymore jobs to be sent to China, like Bain and Sensata are doing in Indiana this very moment. If the Greens have good candidates in my state (WA), I will vote for them – but I will not allow my vote to be part of the reason that Romney and the GOP to take us all back to their 1950′s Leave It To Beaver world that never actually existed. Please don’t trash me for voting for Obama – I have reasons as stated above. But if the Greens become nationally relevant (ie – able to run a candidate who can actually win the majority and be one of a number who all get voted in like the Tea Party did in 2010 – they put a lot of people in office) in my lifetime – my votes would almost certainly go to them. Thank you.

Hey Places, if you don’t like China I hope you don’t have an iPod or anything else made there. Why is Steve Jobs (a genuine SOB) a hero and Romney a villain? I can bet you’ve bought plenty of things made in China so let’s not be hypocritical.
I’ve always liked Biden in the past personally even when I didn’t agree with him. I cannot believe how rude and disrespectful he was in the debate. If I were in a swing state I would have to seriously consider voting against Obama and Biden – the Libya lies ought to be the end of them.

The questions are lame, Jim Lehrer hands have been tied. It’s obvious that the Commission on Presidential Debates has limited the questions down to “what’s the difference between you two?” because they don’t want to bring up any specifics. This conversation is so superficial and lacking substance. If you want to see good questions, visit the Nonpartisan Presidential Debates here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35LlDozdP_w&feature=plcp. We will be hosting substantive debates again in four years, when people have finally figured out that there’s no difference between the Republicans and Democrats and that if we want real change, we have to get out from under their corporate puppet masters. This is an unsustainable situation.
