Fletcher Switches to Independent in SD Mayoral Race
By Kymberly Bays | 03/28/2012 | California, Elections 2012, Local Office | 3 Comments
Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher announced today that he is dropping his Republican party preference and running as an independent for Mayor in San Diego.
The late decision will test his credibility with independent voters. Fletcher despite heaving funding from the city’s Republican establishment and seen as one of the party’s stars, was running well behind in the polls.
California Republicans had endorsed San Diego City Councilmember Carl DeMaio, who also leads in campaign funds.
Polling and focus groups have suggested that independent voters put a premium on authenticity. Is Fletcher’s switch an honest change of heart or a cynical campaign gimmick? His viability likely hinges on what these critical swing voters will believe.

Fletcher created Chelsea’s law in Sacramento without a source of funding.Congressman Filner is more than just a Democrat. Bob Filner actually brings in new sources of Federal funding into San Diego specifically for Veterans and their families. Congressman Filner fought for the new G.I. Bill through cooperation and coalitions formed with Republicans, Democrats, and Independents. http://democrats.veterans.house.gov/news/PRArticle.aspx?NewsID=671Congressman Bob Filner Applauds Administration’s Plan to Provide Assistance to Homeless Veterans. “During my tenure as Chairman of the Committee, addressing the problem of homelessness among our nation’s veterans was a top priority of mine, and I will continue to work closely with President Obama to realize our goal to end veteran homelessness by 2015,” stated Filner. “The challenge is immense, but the progress we have made so far is encouraging.”.Filner was especially pleased to see that San Diego is slated to receive $1.2 million for 150 grants. “San Diego has been in the forefront of exploring innovative ideas to end the problem of homelessness, and these grants will certainly help. I am hopeful that the lessons we are learning on how best to address veterans’ homelessness will enable us to tackle the challenge of homelessness for all of our citizens.”.

We are in desperate need of leaders that are able to work across party lines and deliver solutions. Fletcher has always shown courage and leadership in putting his constituents ahead of party politics. Becoming an Independent will allow him to better focus on positive results for San Diego and not on partisan politics.
